What are Psychedelic Mushrooms and What can They do for us?

    Introduction

Psilocybin, otherwise known as magic mushrooms, “Bammers”, psychedelic shrooms, and even a plant of the Gods. I am sure there are all different kinds of names for these on the streets since they were considered a schedule 1 drug back during Nixon’s presidency and the War on drugs. Schedule 1 drugs in the United States are those that are purported to have the following traits: 1) The drug or other substance has a high potential risk of abuse 2) The drug or other substance has no currently accepted medical use in treatment within the United States. I don’t know if you have tried them, but you won’t want to do them twice in one day, or every day at that! So, the probability of abuse is nearly non-existent! Furthermore, there are so many more medicinal properties than almost all “Big Pharma” medicines, without any side effects.

In June of 1971, Nixon established that drug abuse was “Public Enemy Number One”, with psilocybin mushrooms being among that list. However, the thing about mycology (which is the study of all fungi) began making some progress towards positive effects of almost all safe mushrooms, and psychedelic mushrooms. Magic Mushrooms and other mushrooms such as Lion’s Mane, Red Reishi, Oyster, and so much more have shown proof of enhancing all kinds of human qualities. Mental clarity, immunological enhancement, neurogenesis, neuro-generation, neuro-regeneration, and even neuroplasticity has all been shown to enhance our minds. Reishi is even called natures Xanax since it helps lower anxiety. Neurogenesis is the origination of newborn nerve cells from stem cells within our body. The more active cells we have the better we will be in almost all aspects of life. Now Neuro-generation and Neuro Regeneration, does exactly as it sounds, generating new neurons, while regenerating helps atrophied neurons. And finally, to top it all off, neuroplasticity which consists of synaptogenesis where more nerves begin branching out more conduits for more connections (JRE, 2019). Neuroplasticity, in other words, is the brain’s ability to adapt to new situations or changes in their environment. Psychedelic Mushrooms just make you feel like a happy person, in almost everything you do.

    How Do They Work?

The way these mushrooms work is quite exceptional actually. People used to think that you were just basically getting food poisoning, which in too high of a dose, you would just raulf it up. But even then, the effects will still last. We will touch base on Micro-dosing, moderate dosing, and even heroic dosing which all have their own benefits within themselves. But first, the chemical response that is happening in our bodies. There are over 200 mushrooms that contain psilocybin which is the naturally occurring chemical compound that makes you experience a psychedelic spectacle. Psilocybin is considered a pro-drug, which is a compound that is inactive by itself, but when metabolized, it can turn into a pharmacological compound in the body (Psilocin). When we consume psilocybin-containing mushrooms (which is the most terrible tasting experience, if it isn’t boiled into a tea, or put in chocolates or capsules), our bodies begin metabolizing the psilocybin into psilocin, which is actually able to bind to our serotonin receptors. Serotonin’s chemical structure is fairly similar to that of psilocin, but it is a monoamine neurotransmitter, which is the source of all those wonderful happy feelings we get from something we enjoy doing, or around people we love being around. It can also be boosted through chemical assistance, where we can establish a new sense of well-being in this life we live. Psilocin is actually considered an agonist, meaning it can initiate a physiological response for our serotonin receptors (Haze and Mandrake, 2016). The following picture will show how closely related the chemical molecule structures are to one another.

So closely related, don’t ya think! (Science Direct, n.d.)

As a neurotransmitter it can assist in relaying messages from one part or section of the brain, to the other. Research from back in 2016, states that there is a sensory overload that happens when someone “trips”, which is caused from the psilocin. This makes the brain become more hyperconnected; that is, it allows for greater communication between parts of the brain that otherwise wouldn’t talk to each other. The process is called Synesthesia phenomena which is said to reorganize connections and strengthen weaker ones, enhancing our mental acuity. It is also something that may make your senses interact with one another. Such as, if you hear music, you may see shapes, or if you hear the name Jake, you may see the color green. It is something that brings all your senses in line with one another, creating a higher acuity of your senses (Haze and Mandrake, 2016). You will see me constantly go back to primal times, comparing what these mushrooms may have done, and how they potentially corelate with our existence today (Stoned Ape Theory), but we will get back to that. This Synesthesia may have helped our primal ancestors to hunt and kill food, pick other certain plants, and even stay alive amidst so many predators.

Our minds have evolved to constantly filtering out any non-useful stimuli in our new world, enabling us to focus on the important task of living our lives, or simply being a human being. It saves our minds resources, and extracts things that can be considered trivialities. Not everyone counts how many cars are being tugged behind a train when stopped at a train crossing. Certain areas of the brain that inhibit distracting stimuli and help maintain our attention, such as the hypothalamus, have been proven to show decreased activity when under the effects of psilocin. Another area is called the claustrum (derived from the Latin word for “hidden or shut away”), which is an extremely thin sheet of neurons deep within the cortex, yet it reaches out to every other region in the brain. The true purpose is also “hidden away”, however there are a few speculations of why it’s there, and what its true purpose is. One is from Francis Crick of DNA-discovery, which he believed the claustrum is responsible for our awareness and sense of self, or the seat of our consciousness (John Hopkins, 2020). With this in mind, Johns Hopkins tested 15 people, whom some took psilocybin, while the others received a placebo. They found that the ones that took the psilocybin, showed a reduced neuronal activity in the claustrum by 15% to even 30%. The lowered activity seemed to be associated with stronger subjective effects of the drug, such as emotional and mystical experiences. The researchers also found that the drug changed the correspondence between the claustrum and brain regions that involve hearing, attention, decision-making, and remembrance (John Hopkins, 2020). This is what ties in with what people claim as typical effects of psychedelics, including feelings of being connected to everything, and more importantly, reduced senses of self or egotistical behavior. New technology, such as the fMRI (functional magnetic resonance imaging) have given researchers the ability to track certain brain activity. Thus, making more breakthroughs on certain effects of mind-altering drugs, such as psilocybin mushrooms, and many more. There has been proven research that shows that they can help manage, or even cure people with PTSD, Depression, Anxiety, and even substance abuse disorder. And to think these are still in the “Schedule One” drug category.

These regions of the brain are usually some of the most active, which play important roles of our sense of self, organizing incoming sensory information, and regulating internal impulses. Aldous Huxley claims that each person is capable at any moment to remember everything that has ever happen to him/her and can even perceive everything that is happening everywhere in the universe at that certain moment. He also believes that the central nervous system and the brain is to protect us from being overwhelmed and confused by this mass of largely useless and irrelevant information that we don’t currently have any use for (Haze and Mandrake, 2016). Usually after the effects wear off, these connections go back to normal, and we won’t experience synesthesia anymore. Most people claim that they feel dulled out after experiencing something so marvelous, and even eye opening, when it comes to sense of ego. There are other ways of reaching this feeling that is being tested currently too. These are pharmacologically similar to psilocybin, such as lysergic acid diethylamide (LSD) and phenethylamine-containing alkaloids (mescaline).

Different Types of our Mushie Friends

Enough about the anatomy of the human body, and words that are extremely hard to say at first. That stuff can continue to drag on, and on, and on……… and on. To start this off, we will touch base on what mushrooms start off as. If you are familiar, you will see most mushrooms have a long stipes (stalks/stems), and convex heads or “caps”. Typically, you will see gills up underneath these caps, and this is where the mushroom stores, these tiny microscopic spores (poet and didn’t know it!). When the mushroom matures fully, thousands of these tiny spores will fall to the earth, causing more mushroom growth. That is why you will see mushroom cultivators, smack the cap before taking the mushroom from its base. However, instead of acting like seeds, and gather energy through photosynthesis–they germinate to produce a mass of interwoven, single-cell wide structures known as hyphae, which is also considered as Shiro. A collective mass of hyphae is known as mycelium.

Mycelium is the plural form of the word Mycelia, which has New Latin and Greek origins, literally meaning more than one. In order to understand the greatness of mycelium, we have to get a little more technical. Fungi absorbs nutrients from the environment such as a substrate (certain conditions of soil), a log, etc., through its mycelium in a two-stage process. First off, those little hyphae (which reminds me of Hefe) secrete enzymes into the decaying wood or other substrate. They break down biological polymers into smaller units called monomers. The mycelium then uses a combination of facilitated diffusion and active transport to absorb these monomers (The Conscious Club, 2017). There is so much more that goes into mycelium, that you can look up for yourself. Some people believe mycelium to be the way that all fungi life communicate in the forest. Fun Fact: The largest single fungal organism is found in the Malheur National Forest, and it belongs to the species called Armillaria Ostoyee. It covers a whopping three and a half square miles or 9 square kilometers in the state of Oregon! Paul Stamets has even found that mycelium can help retain our bee population, to continue pollinating the earth. By protecting them from detrimental diseases that hinder their wing growth. Really interesting stuff if you ask me!

The following is a progression of a mushroom, from the beginning mushroom spore, all the way to the developing fruiting body that you typically will see above ground. Even though the larger, more branched out aspect of the mushroom is below ground.

                            Quite the Cycle (Mycologic, n.d.)

Though there are many different species of psilocybin containing mushrooms, we will only touch base on the main species that hold the most affect. The most potent types of psilocybin containing mushrooms belong to the genus Psilocybe. You can find all kinds of information of the different types of mushrooms, and their poisonous look alikes, in Paul Stamets book: Psilocybin Mushrooms of The World: An Identification Guide (1996). All of these different species carry three different “ingredients”, Psilocybin, Psilocin, and Baeocystin. There are 12 species but there are only 7 that have high enough percentages to account for: Psilocybe Azurescens, Psilocybe Bohemica, Psilocybe Semilanceata, Psilocybe Baeocystis, Psilocybe Cyanescens, Psilocybe Tampanensis, and the most common Psilocybe Cubensis. We won’t go into the description of each, however, they are in order from the most potent, to the least potent in all three “ingredients”. Go take a look at the full descriptions if you have time.

Dosing Types: Micro, Moderate, and Heroic Dosages

The thing about mushrooms being blacklisted all those years ago, they weren’t able to be assessed by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), to find the proper dosing for an actual supplement. It isn’t like your traditional dietary or nutritional supplement that you will find at the local drug store, where recommended daily allowance has been arduously tested. So, the following dosages aren’t proven, and should be taken lightly, especially since there are numerous factors that must come into play. What is the species? What is the potency of that specific mushroom? Is it consumed wet or dry? How much do you personally weigh? Of course, there are all kinds of unknowns out there, and skepticism makes people think it is all just for the “hippies”. In some of the pioneering psilocybin studies done at Johns Hopkins University, controlled doses of psilocybin were administered to patients.

***Let it be known, I do not perform any illegal activity, and I do not suggest that anyone does anything illegal. This is just information that I have gathered for the purpose of education. NONE of this information has been tested by the Food and Drug Administration and should not be used as a remedy for any mental illnesses. Please consult with you physician, therapist, or psychiatrist for any means possible to help with your specific illness. I need to notify you of this before you proceed. This disclosure is here for your safety and understanding (and mine of course)***

    Micro-Dosing

Micro-dosing is exactly as it sounds, where you take just enough to have the mental effects, without the full body high and altered visual perception. It just enacts the happy feeling that you get from taking a larger dose. According to Curative Mushrooms (2020), A proper dosage for micro dosing would be 1/10th of a gram, which may change to your certain body type. So, remember, there are 1000 milligrams in one gram, so you would take 100 mgs for the traditional micro dose. There is also the body weight method, which you take .25 mg per kilogram of bodyweight.

I will also bring in the infamous Paul Stamets, and his patented micro dose formula, where he stacks psilocybin with Lion’s Mane and niacin. Lions’ mane is another delicacy mushroom that is legal and has shown proof of helping with nerve regenerative properties. Other benefits of Lions Mane are as follows:  Increases memory, increases focus, increases concentration, Anti-inflammatory, supports gut health, improves mood, increases energy levels, and Supports insulin sensitivity (Microdosing Institute, n.d.). So, this mushroom alone, can give anyone a lot of supporting health benefits. His stack is as follows:

    DAYS 1-4: Micro dosing days

    DAY 5-7: Non-micro dosing days

    • No micro dose
    • Optional: Niacin
    • Optional: Continue implementing Lion’s Mane

     CYCLE: continue for four weeks

RESET: Stop micro dosing with psilocybin for two to four weeks. You may continue supplementing with Lion’s Mane during this reset (Microdosing Institute, n.d.)

    Moderate Dosing

Again, it is exactly how it sounds, a moderate dose. You will find all different kinds of numbers when it comes to a moderate dose. Curative Mushrooms (2020) states that a typical moderate dose would be 1-4 grams. While others say anywhere from one gram to 3.5 grams. That is where the traditional eighth that most people enjoy taking comes from. This is a practice that can be conducted every so often, such as every month or two. All depending on your schedule and ability. You won’t have the full dissolution of self that you would a heroic dose, but you will feel the effects, both physically, visually, and emotionally. That nice word, synesthesia comes back into play at this dose, where your senses begin to cross. Of course, there isn’t many studies conducted on this dosage practice, since again, they are illegal…. But I am positive that there will be more as the days pass. This helps keep your empathy levels higher throughout the time span in between dosages.

Heroic Dosing-Lets Get Ready to Rumble!!

Now for the large dosage, that completely dissolves your sense of self. The dissolution of self sounds intimidating; however, it is only for the duration of the trip, and there may be some lingering feelings for a few days after. This feeling is something that is thought of coming from the claustrum (as stated earlier) where it is thought of being our seat of consciousness. It can be more looked at as, the dissolution of our ego, instead of our self. Because, well, everyone always remembers their name, and who they are after the fact. Sometimes you may begin questioning who you are, and what your purpose is in this finite life. But more often than not, it always pushes you towards something more positive. You may learn that you must quit putting so much effort in finding the negative aspects of life and begin focusing more on the positive aspects of it. Or maybe even quit taking yourself so seriously and start having a little more fun in life. Another trait that people have found they experience after a heroic dose, is they become more empathetic with the people around them. When we can start feeling other people’s pains, then we may even be able to stop being the root cause of their pain. It is sort of like an eye-opening experience, helping us to be a bit more introspective in our actions. When you begin looking more inwards, you may be able to find that you are at fault for your own tribulations. Thus, creating an avenue to changing for the better.

I will bring up good ole curative mushrooms, yet again. According to Oliver, a heroic dose would be 5-7 grams (2020). However, there are also others claims of it being anything above seven dry grams of psilocybin. It is kind of like the old saying with beans: “Beans, Beans, the magical fruit, the more you eat, the more you toot”. So, besides the tooting part… it is a lot the same. Taking anything above six dry grams, you will find yourself in an altered dimension almost. Again, this sounds scary, but it really isn’t that bad. You will see the whole world waving in a sense, which is really neat when you look at the horizon, or even some cool art. Synesthesia begins to set in, where you think you are hearing colors, and seeing sounds.

Johns Hopkins has found that one heroic dose has shown to have long lasting effects, where people claimed to have a personality change. They claimed to have a more openness feeling when it came to life, looking at life in a whole new lens almost. Openness includes traits such as imagination, aesthetics, feelings, abstract ideas, and general broad-mindedness. They also claimed to have more of a spiritual side after the experience. Most of the individuals were over the age of 30, which it is thought that we don’t really make any drastic personality changes after 30 years old. These lasting affects lasted anywhere from 12 months to 15 months in the 51 people that they tested. Reduction of anxiety, fear, and sad thoughts was also found throughout this study. So, I mean, why wouldn’t you want to do this every six months to a year? Of course, it needs to be in a comfortable environment, where you have someone that is sober (and knows what the experience is like) to be able to keep everyone and everything in line. People have even tried conducting therapy sessions during these experiences, to help guide people into changing certain traits of their lives.

If this stuff interests you, then I know you have heard of the word (or person), Shaman. A Shaman is someone that is believed to have a connection with good and evil spirits or is influenced by the afterlife/before life. They typically enter a trance state during a ritual to practice divination and healing for the people participating in the ritual. You may also look at them as your guide into your psychedelic experience, where when you begin to venture off, they can center you back into your purpose. They believe that they can obtain healing powers whilst in the ritual, for almost all of the people around them. They are admired as one of the more powerful human beings in this present life. You can find the biggest influence in these people in remote areas of the Amazonian Forest. Where nature is more important than the smart phone or computer you are currently using. They are these peoples Google in a sense, where they can give them answers to the most important questions about life. These people are found to have almost nothing in their possessions but are some of the happiest people on the face of the earth. There must be a connection to the psychedelic experiences they endure.

    Stoned Ape Theory

First proposed by a main stream ethnobotanist Terence McKenna (1946-2000) in his early 90’s book “Food of the Gods,” the basic concept is that the consumption of psychedelic fungi may have played a crucial role in the development of human mind and culture (Lamb, 2021). Of course, he believed that the “Stoned Ape Hypothesis” misrepresented his theory, but it is still the name that stuck. Terrance and his brother Dennis McKenna (who is an ethnopharmacologist) must have had some DEEP, late-night conversations when it comes to something as intense as this theory. Dennis claims that they put forth the evidence during their conversations to come up with this theory. Long story short, the hypothesis suggests we owe the emergence of language and self-reflection to ancient, sustained consumption of psilocybin mushrooms all those years ago. They know that the human brain doubled in size about two million years ago, which is of course evidence that would need to be dug into more, but we will just roll with it for the sake of description. It is also thought to have been apart of the “Creative Explosion” that happened around 40,000 years ago. Where homo sapiens began living in their own creations, making tools, and hunting in a more innovative way. This again made the development even faster all the way up to where we are today.

With the effects of psilocybin making our mental acuity higher, and deeper visual perception, they may have been able to think and react faster. This would make them be less susceptible of getting attacked by larger predators, or even finding, and killing their food for daily rations. The long tale of Vikings drinking ale and eating mushrooms before battle runs congruent with his hypothesis. Where it is thought that they fought harder, moved faster, seen incoming attacks, and even weren’t afraid of death. Of course, none of us lived in this era, and the probability of finding more documentation is slim, so it will remain that… a theory. If we could travel back in time and find that we adapted to our surroundings because of mushrooms, then I bet they would get legalized that same time. But I guess, if we had the technology to time travel, then our superficial problems wouldn’t exist anymore… or we would create even more problems!

    Summary

So, I know that if you are reading this, then you are obviously interested in this topic. And honestly, throughout the duration of this article, I told myself that I wouldn’t take a stab at big pharma. But in my opinion, I think marijuana, and psilocybin mushrooms were both outlawed so that “man-made” remedies could begin to corner the market. I feel like they already knew about the medicinal properties of both these NATURAL remedies, but they knew they couldn’t regulate it, since they could easily be grown at home. Sometimes I feel like money turns most people into greedy individuals. Most man-made products have been proven to lead to more side effects than the initial illness that is trying to be healed. Don’t get me wrong, I absolutely love innovation, and it is one of the best times to be alive, however, I feel like we are all being controlled by the elites of our world. They may not think they are, because that is what they were taught as they were coming up. But it all started somewhere. It only takes 30 years to completely change the outlook of an entire generation, and I believe we are beginning to yet again, change the outlook, of an entire generation. If mushrooms didn’t get blacklisted all those years ago, just think about the amount of research that could have been done by now. I don’t know about you, but I truly believe that if it worked all those years ago, why ON EARTH wouldn’t it work now!? I think if every person on earth took a heroic dose once a year, our world could potentially be a better place. The absence of ego would bring more people together. The increase in empathy would make people think before they acted in a negative way. And finally, the closeness that we could all experience with our fellow humanoid, would rid us all of division. We wouldn’t all resort to tribalism, where it is thought that we all MUST reside on one side or the other, or one country or the other. Instead, we could all reside in one harmonious connection of fellow humans, who are all on the same, good ole’ Pursuit of Happiness.

I hope you enjoyed my article, and I look forward to hearing any feedback you may have. Please stay tuned to more information on mushrooms, not only Psilocybin mushrooms, but all medicinal mushrooms. If you know of any new research pertaining to this topic, please feel free to reach out to me at any time via email, socials or anywhere else. Just search the unique name, you will find it.

Have an excellent day, and remember, “Every situation you are in, is a test of who YOU truly are”

    -Cyral I Callender III

Post-Script: The world is just a reflection of yourself. Whatever you put out into the world, it will get reflected onto you. If you stare into a mirror, and you hate what you see, you cannot attack the image, but you can change it. Whenever you transform, the world will transform around you. In a state of non-acceptance, you will attack the image. But if you accept yourself as is, then your image won’t attack you. Mental illness is not the problem, you are the problem. As long as your Ego mind thinks of it that way, you will never get better. DO NOT blame life for treating you unfairly, but do not blame yourself either, all that is, is resistance.

    Much love people.

  • Who is Cyral I. Callender III

Who is Cyral I. Callender III

Hello my friends! Having my Bachelors degree in Health and Wellness, I have studied all different types of–well– Health and Wellness. Everything stemming from physical activity, to anatomy and physiology, proper diet habits, and stages of change. While also studying the possibility of integrative medicines or alternative medicines to Western Societal Medicine. Traditional Chinese Medicines worked all those centuries ago, so I mean, It has to work in some way, shape, or form. I started my college career as a diesel mechanic at my local college, but I did some digging into my future goals and desires. I knew I didn’t want to work on heavy machinery for the rest of my life. Getting doused in oil, smashing my hands taking off a bolt, or digging through the cold snow to get to a certain part. Nuh uh… that wasn’t for me anymore, my time of field work was finished. I was always told that if you do something you love, then you will never work a day in your life. I asked myself, “What was something that I absolutely loved doing”. One, physical activity and healthier lifestyles. Two, helping every person that I possibly can throughout the duration of my time on earth. And finally, constantly learning new ways to make those two aspects of life a reality and relevant to the current time. I searched for schools within my range of travel, however, the closest place would have been Denver, Colorado. (Which is a four hour drive!) You know the saying that everything happens for a reason? Well at the very same time that I was searching for schools, I had an opportunity of a life time of starting my own small business with a friend. I knew we would have made this partnership work, so I couldn’t leave him behind. So, as I was building the limited Liability Company, I was searching for online schools. All while working 10 hours a day, attending in-person college, getting my workouts in, and fitting in small stretches of sleep here and there. One night, with my eyes heavy, I found a school through the slits of my eyes, just before they closed for the night. Purdue University Global was accentuated in its black and gold colors on my screen. I quickly requested more information, and dosed off right on the couch of my apartment. Just to wake up five hours later to start my day again with a solid workout. I got the grants, and funding to attend Purdue University Global for my bachelors in Health and Wellness. It hasn’t been easy. Being a father of three (almost four), a small business owner (which did all the accounting, data, and traditional work), a board member for the State of Wyoming and for our local disc golf group, and to finish it off, training as a combat sports player. Fast forward four years, in May of 2022, I finally graduated. I must say, the long-term gratification of finally graduating was the best feeling in the world, after my children being born of course. With my past history of being a delinquent in my late adolescent/early 20’s, that feeling was more intense than any substance known to man. The possibility of changing, and becoming who you want to be is obtainable, no matter how deep you think you are. It isn’t easy, but you must be willing to put forth the effort. I am just a casual guy, trying to assist anyone I possibly can into changing their lives for the better. Please reach out at any time of day, no matter what it is. Much love and respect, and I appreciate the support. Thanks for reading 🙂

  • Casper, Wyoming Health Needs Assessment

    Casper, Wyoming Health Needs Assessment

Public health is something that has been a worry for quite some time now, even more so since this pandemic started. Over the last two decades, there has been a drive towards better community health assessments and actions to promote their communities needs. Health promotion can be implemented through several different avenues, especially with healthier lifestyle changes. That is a broad few words, since there is so much more that goes into that. The proper diet, frequent doctor check-ups, physical activity, mental health, and less stress are some of the most important to address. We must come together as a community for any of these health promotion ideas to work. So, implementing them may be difficult, however, it can be done through several avenues and people having the desire to change. Integral parts of the following are all included in community-based health systems: health promotion, models of community health needs assessments (CHNA), demographic composition, socioeconomic status, health status, quality of life, and community capacity.

First and foremost, health promotion can be done through all different kinds of community-based programs. According to Merzel and D’Afflitti (2003), health promotions main strategy for achieving population level change with risk behaviors and health, is through emphasizing community-based programs to enable multiple interventions. Doing workplace wellness programs or other educational courses can help promote community health needs. According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (2022), CHNA’s use systematic, comprehensive data collection and analysis to identify key health needs and issues within a community. The relevance between CHNA’s and health promotion is focused on the health of the communities it is working through. The community that will be assess further through my reports will be my local community, Casper, Wyoming. I aspire to assist in the improvements of my community with its physical fitness percentage and proper nutrition counseling. All other positive health promotions will come through these changing of lifestyles.

The Casper, Wyoming CHNA is named the Community Health implementation Strategy, that was created in November of 2019. Through a panel of 60 people, a vote was placed to set certain goals for health promotion within the community. According to the Wyoming Medical Center (2019), four core goals were set forth for the locality of our community: Healthy Eating/Active Lifestyle, Substance Abuse/Misuse, Mental Health/Suicide, and finally Safe/ Affordable Housing through the Casper Housing Authority. All four of these goals are relevant to our local needs from my perspective, and others. Furthermore, I think each one is step into the next, resulting in better results.

Mobilizing for Action through Planning and Partnerships (MAPP) would be the best assessment structure for Casper’s CHNA. With Wyoming medical Center and Casper-Natrona County Health Department partnering up to establish a proper analysis of the community, which has brought some amazing results. Going to and from local high schools and middle schools gives the assessment a better classification for our adolescent aged population. While also getting surveys set up within the workplaces across the town gives the adult population their statistics. When it comes to the substance abuse /Misuse section of the CHNA, they were able to get an accurate analysis compared with other cities within Wyoming and even the nation.

The demographic composition of Casper is approximately 79,858 people residing within the entire county. According to the County Health Rankings and Roadmaps (2021), 23.9% of the population is below the age of 18, 15.9% of the population is 65+ years old, and finally the middle-aged population is 52.1%. It is a predominately white community with 86.3% being non-Hispanic White, 8.7% Hispanic, and all other races being below two percent, with 49.6% of the population being female (County Health Rankings and Roadmaps, 2021). Most of the population lives in an urban environment, with only 14.4% of people living outside of city limits where farming is the main source of income (County Health Rankings and Roadmaps, 2021).

The socioeconomic composition is surprisingly average throughout the state, with 94% of people graduating from High School and merely 64% attending some level of college (County Health Rankings and Roadmaps, 2021). This is with graduates and GED participants included into each other. The unemployment rate sits right at 3.9% in 2021, which should be different now in 2022 after the expulsion of COVID-19 restrictions (County Health Rankings and Roadmaps, 2021). Unfortunately, there are 13% of children in poverty and 22% of children live in a single-family household, whether with their mother or father (County Health Rankings and Roadmaps, 2021). 34.3% of the population is currently renting their residence, with a household income rate being at 4,749 per month (Wyoming Medical Center, 2019).

The health status of Natrona County has its pros, and its cons. According to County Health Rankings and Roadmaps (2021), 86% of people have accessibility to exercise, yet only 24% claim to be physically inactive. This number is astounding since the accessibility is so high with natural trails and gym locations being everywhere. Local gyms and large chain gyms are located throughout the city and the mountain only 10 minutes away provides a lot of hiking/biking trails. According to the Wyoming Medical Center (2019), there are only 1.3 grocery stores per 10,000 people, while there is an outrageous number of fast-food restaurants, being 8.4 restaurants per 10,000 people. Fast food contributes to all kinds of unhealthy lifestyles, especially if someone that isn’t physically active is consuming this type of product. Fast food can actually contribute to the depression within the community which sits at 21.9% of people claiming to have been diagnosed with some sort of depressive state (Wyoming Medical Center, 2019).

The quality of life at the community level has begun to become more important over the years. This pandemic has shown to fellow Wyomingites, that coming together and working as a team for our public health safety is more important than ever. Local businesses have done everything they can to provide a safer environment for their consumers. While public health departments have offered care more frequently to people in need. Our society has realized that each other’s safety, brings safety to themselves as well. Our school’s have created a cleaner system of teaching within their classes, and better means of transportation to and from school. “Casper Strong” has become one of the main mantras of our society, with it being in almost every yard in every residential area.

The three sources that the following statistics represent are Home Snacks, Wyoming Medical Center, and County Health rankings and Roadmaps. According to Home Snacks (2021), there are 3,196.4 crimes per 100,000 people, with 292.6 being violent crimes, and the most being property crimes, sitting at 2,903.8 crimes per 100,000 people. This gives an idea of the crime rate here in Natrona County, where murder isn’t very prevalent within our society. According to Wyoming Medical Center (2019), 42.6 per 100,000 people have reported to conduct self-harm, with 63.8 % of that being the female population and the suicide rate is 39 per 100,000 people, with the male population being more prominent in that statistic. And finally, 16% of people in Natrona County claim to be in poor health with the average life expectancy sitting around 77.6 years of age (County Health Rankings and Roadmaps, 2021). These three sources all have accurate statistics of the quality of life here in Natrona County, dating back to 2010.

Community capacity is the ability for the community to accommodate the current population’s needs. With proper amount of housing and infrastructure that can keep the population going. If there isn’t enough housing, then there will be more people out of shelter. If the power grid isn’t sufficient, then there will be people out of power. Furthermore, if the roads aren’t large enough to allow a proper flow of traffic, then there may be more accidents than before. This is included into the needs assessment for those reasons and to establish future building permits. If there isn’t enough housing, then there needs to be apartment buildings included in the fiscal years building initiatives.

When it comes to Natrona County, our community capacity is right at the level of overflow. With Natrona County being an oilfield city, there are always “employment refugees” entering our city. However, they come just as fast as they go since the oil market is so volatile. In recent years, the city has been able to accommodate the large uptake of people during the oil booms. Casper Housing Authority has made more residential areas and has put up more apartment buildings just within city limits. More Hyper stores such as Home Depot and Menards have found their stores being built here, for the capacity reasoning. After taking the survey provided in this week’s reading material, the Health and Wellbeing of Natrona County received a great score. The 14 questions addressed different classifications of health within our community. I personally believe that all the sectors within Casper are sufficient and are maintained well.

All in all, Natrona County has its downfalls, however, it does have its very own benefits. With Community Health Needs Assessments being conducted at least every five years, the assessors can establish trends over the years. Health promotion, models of community health needs assessments (CHNA), demographic composition, socioeconomic status, health status, quality of life, and community capacity have all been addressed with sources backing all the statistics and percentages. Coming together as a community has proven to bring people together, instead of further apart. If the small-scale model from our lower population can be mimicked into a larger population, I believe that there could be benefits within health promotion and needs of the population. Instead of everything being so polarizing and pushing against each other, we all should come together to reach a common goal, of a better world. Starting from one County to one State, to one Country at a time.

    Upcoming Health Promotion Program

I hope everyone is having an excellent Monday, the ninth of May, 2022! Over the span of the next several days, I will be posting new posts every day to top off the 30 day streak that you all have been following so far. These posts will all be centered around Casper, Wyoming, and what I personal can do as a health and wellness professional. You will learn a little bit about my processes of the Health Promotion program, and who the target population is. I think you will be surprised with the numbers that I found during the first post. I was under the impression that our community was one of the healthiest in the entire state. However, that doesn’t seem to be the case. That is why I put so much time into the Health Promotion program. While serving on the State Rehabilitation Council for the state of Wyoming, I have been had the opportunity to meet people that would help get this program moving. It is just like everything, it all will take time. But I feel like we can help improve our local community, even on a day to day basis. So please continue to follow the posts each day at 7 o’clock A.M., and please send me some feedback. I am always looking to improve on my writing, or my abilities to make a bigger impact on our community!

  • Stress in People with Disabilities

    Stress in People with Disabilities

The following is a project I completed during my college career, pertaining to Stress management and prevention. I found holistic approaches to dealing with stress, with the target population being people with disabilities. Though we all face stressors in this life, some people face their own stressors. That is why we must always remain kind to our acquaintances, since we don’t necessarily understand what they may be going through. All we have to do is do a little bit of our own research on how to cope with stress, with physical activity being the leading ailment. I hope you enjoy this article.

One thing in this world that we all experience at some point in our lives, is stress. Some people more than others, but we all will go through it, and some of us are able to manage our stress a little bit better than others. According to Seaward, stress is the perception of a threat (real or imagined) to one’s physical, mental, or spiritual well-being resulting in a series of physiological reactions and adaptations (Seaward, 2017). The target population that I will focus on, is people with disabilities. Whether physical, emotional, mental, or any other type of hinderance they may have that will make it harder for them to qualify for a job. This could be from past mistakes, where they were convicted of a felony or some other past mistake. Not being able to obtain a better paying job, could stress them out from not being able to pay bills, or provide for their families. I believe that we can make it possible for people with disabilities to get past their stressors in life, that hinders them from interacting with others, or being able to get a good paying job. If we implement a plan at the state or federal level, we could help these people obtain schooling, or vocational requirements for better jobs that they may not qualify for in the first place. As a member of the Governors State Rehabilitation Counsel (SRC), I will do what I can to help provide for these individuals through the department of vocational rehabilitation (DVR).

There are going to be a conglomerated number of stressors that people with disabilities will face in their life, and it will all be broken down into separate disabilities that they may have. If they received a physical disability from an accident or fighting for our country, then it may be difficult for them to complete manual tasks. This could create stressors in a variety of different ways through the thought of not being able to keep their family safe from danger. As a man, I know that if I was hindered from protecting my children in anyway, I would stress out about everything. Going places we’ve never been before, certain areas in cities, or even in the possibility of a home invasion. Not being able to stand up for their defenseless souls would make it to where I would stress out about where we would go, in all ways.

Next on the physical disabilities, another stressor would be not being able to provide for their families. The most employed industries in the state of Wyoming are all manual labor employers. This would make it to where they wouldn’t be able to lift heavy objects above 50 pounds, making it impossible to get any job along those lines. Some of the other jobs that they could potentially get that would give them a good enough income, would most likely need more of an education. That is where The State Rehabilitation Counsel comes in, where the individual could receive some sort of state funding to acquire the education that they would need. Whether it is an associate degree, or some sort of vocational training that they need, we can help them get the grants they need to pay for their schooling.

If a person is paralyzed from the waist down, they would need to rely on a wheelchair to get them around. In which most houses, or buildings aren’t accommodated for wheelchair access. This would make it hard for them to work anywhere else, except from home. Of course, there are some exceptional people that have adapted to their injuries and created something huge. But most are confined to their homes, which could create a stressor in itself. Not being able to leave home could give them cabin fever and even prolong a level of depression that would make it even harder to progress with tasks. I couldn’t even fathom the pain and suffering they would be condemned to, through actual pain, and mental instabilities.

In other cases, there could be someone that is hearing impaired, resulting in them not being able to hear details of tasks. Not being able to hear what they would need to do at their job, or just life in general, could create a stressor to no end. I couldn’t even imagine what that person would go through, since I am able to hear. However, I would feel like their balance could be off since that is a contributor to our equilibrium. Also, with driving, they wouldn’t be able to observe their surroundings creating a stressful environment almost all day every day. The closest people to them would of course be able to communicate with them, but not everybody understands sign language, thus making it impossible for them to communicate with others.

Now with someone that can hear, but can’t speak, that is another story. Of course, they would have the communication hinderance that they would need to go about daily life. Whether in the workplace, or just simply going about their duties, it would be stressful to communicate. Communication is key, and one of the biggest aspects of communication is comprehension and understanding. Without that in either party, it could be stressful, or frustration could arise in between the two. Not being able to tell someone what your implications are for a better understanding, could create stressors within frustration. It all depends on how calm the person could remain, and potentially be able to write something to someone else on a piece of paper. In which could take quite some time, and most people would look at that as an inconvenience.

Now the combination of the two, but the person is blind, not being able to see any of their surroundings. They might be intelligent, since they don’t have to see the negatives of this world that are going on and aren’t tempted by exotic desires. However, they wouldn’t be able to navigate through this world without some sort of crutch, or someone to guide them. If they were in their own home, where they have everything memorized, then they could get around that way. Furthermore, not being able to see what they are doing, they most likely couldn’t get employed doing hands on jobs, or even typing ones. That is also where SRC and DVR could come in to assist them in finding them the right employment to pay their bills.

Another stressor that this population could face is within their mental health. According to Rethink Statistics, approximately 1 in 5 adults-or 43.8 million adults suffer from some sort of mental disability (Rethink, n.d.). This is an astronomical number that no body thinks about when they are walking by people on the streets or stores. Having any mental disability will make it hard to acquire a job within almost any field. Some of the more severe mental disabilities are those of people that have some sort of autism. Of course, they wouldn’t be required to work, but the possibility is always still there. If they were to age, and get a family of their own, how could they provide for them if they couldn’t do things like math, or logical thinking to get the job. SRC will assist in that as well.

Some more mental disabilities would be things like Anxiety, depression, post traumatic stress disorder, or any mental illness that can inhibit them from progressing through life. I personally suffer from post-traumatic stress disorder, anxiety, and depression and though some days are better than others, some days are rough. I have found that on the bad days, I must try harder to push forward and complete the tasks at hand. Either way, some people’s depression is so strong, that they don’t even want to get out of bed in the mornings, while others anxiety can inhibit them from even going out to see other people. Not being able to have a social life can begin to stress people out, since we have those tribal instincts of community within our DNA.

Post Traumatic Stress disorder could make it to where people won’t be able to drive anywhere if they had been in a traumatic experience involving a vehicle. Whether their truck got blown up in war, or they were in a bad accident, they wouldn’t want to get into a vehicle. Thus, hindering them from being able to travel around easily and always having to rely on other people to get them around. This can cause stress because they couldn’t make it to appointments or even other life expectations within a timely manner. Having to rely on other people to get you somewhere could be a stressor, since most people have their own lives to deal with.

According to a study, people with disabilities are more prone to be affected by stress-related illnesses, such as obesity, cardiovascular problems, cancers, and diabetes (Rhode, et.al., 2012). With these illnesses looming above them, with them already being disabled, cold create more stress within itself. It would be like a revolving cycle. Being disabled can cause stress within itself, which then can cause other disabilities from stress. Attempting to process that as a disable person would make it hard to even continue through normal day life. Thinking about how no matter what they do, their disability could cause them more problems down the road if it persists. It would sort of make them feel like there is no reason to continue which is why an estimated amount of 18-22 veterans die from suicide every day (Rethink n.d.).

These stressors are important to consider for this population for the reasons stated earlier. They already have some sort of disability that they have either had their entire life or succumbed to some accident or exposure to chemicals. Within their already exciting disabilities, others could arise from them which could be life threatening. Living an already sedentary lifestyle from the inability to get up and exercise could create even more health problems for them. No body thinks about how many benefits physical activity can have on a person unless they are doing it already. Someone that is in the first stages of the change model, doesn’t even acknowledge the importance of exercising at least every other day. Now combine that with a person with disabilities and they can contract all sorts of auto-immune disorders, or something more severe that could danger their lives (Rhode, et.al., 2012).

Some stress reduction/management programs that people could do are mindfulness practices, self-evaluation, and more natural means through holistic approaches. Mindfulness is a single word, but it has so many different meanings to it. There are practices like meditation and yoga that a person with disabilities could perform. The importance of mindfulness practices is to calm the mind, heart, and soul through deep breathing exercises and calm mind evaluation. Being able to focus on the breath and meditate on things that are going on in their lives could result in them having more of a clarity of life. With mental clarity, they can move right into the next stress management practice, self-evaluation.

Self-evaluation is being able to look more inward of yourself, and processing how you feel and determine irrational thoughts. Sometimes we allow external stimuli to affect our internal perceptions of ourselves. So, a person with some sort of disability, could think really low of themselves since they aren’t like every other person. They watch professional sports players do the things they do, and they could wish that they could even do half of that. Or if they became disabled due to a tragic event, they would feel remorse because they couldn’t do the things they use to. Processing that, and thinking more inward through self-evaluation, they could find something to create from the nothing that they think they have. They could evaluate if their thoughts are too irrational, and if they were overthinking something that was more minimal than anything. Through both practices, they could find a common ground, and push through their emotions and maybe even create something of themselves.

Holistic healing approaches are beginning to make a come back in our society now days. Most of them have stemmed from centuries ago within in old traditional Chinese medicines, Ayurvedic medicines, or other old school natural means of healing. Of course, most of these practices incorporate meditation and self-evaluation into it, but there are other qualities of it. Things like Reiki and other energy aligning practices have proven to help people with mental instabilities such as anxiety, depression, P.T.S.D., aches and pains, as well as lack of quality sleep. Reiki is an alternative therapy that is commonly referred to as energy healing which arose in the late 1800’s from Japan, where the practitioner attempts to channel the patients energy through their palms, to align their Chakras (Newman, 2017). It is told that are bodies have chakras, which are different points of our body that can sometimes get out of line. Through stressful events, or lack of mindfulness practices, these can get all out of whack, creating more stress within ourselves. Energy healing practices are there for us, to get our chakras aligned so that we can reach our Chi, or a level of enlightenment/calmness.

I would implement these practices through the teaching of meditation and recommend gyms that provide yoga classes. Of course, some yoga classes are physically demanding, but there are modalities that can be done to incorporate every person signing up. I would also refer them to reflexology centers that offer all sorts of alternative, and integrative practices that are more focused on the individuals well-being, and sanity. On top of that, I would teach them self-evaluation techniques that they could do daily. If they are hindered from receiving employments, I would ask them to apply for services within the Department of Rehabilitation Center and The Department of Vocational Rehabilitation.

One of the main obstacles I would face for this population would be that they don’t want any help. We can’t help someone if they have no desire to change. They would rather stay in the revolving cycle that they have been in forever. But explaining to them the benefits of these practices could potentially convince them to begin working on themselves. Other obstacles could be their loved ones not wanting anyone else to try and take care of them. Some members of heir family have been their caregivers since day one, so the thought of someone else attempting to help them could make it hard to do.

One type of health professional that could implement this program, would be someone that has practiced Reiki, or other energy healing practices. There is another practice called Reflexology, where they perform acupressure on different points of the feet to obtain natural healing. Another health professional could be a physiatrist or therapist. These practices really penetrate deep into the mind in order to find the root cause of their mental instabilities and could potentially assist them in coping better with their problems. Whether they prescribe them medication, or they want to take a more alternative route. Maybe they could even do some integrative practices, such as taking the medication, and practice more mindfulness practices to reach a common ground.

They would measure their progress from their intake with a psychiatrist of therapist, to their progression through their time seeing them. Most people could see advancements in their mental health within a couple weeks, but in order to maintain that progress, they would need to continue seeing their psychiatrist. It also could be measured by their health and wellness. Things such as their cardiovascular system could begin to be at a maintained level and blood pressure could drop. Also, their levels of cortisol, which is a stress hormone would be diminished greatly. Their productivity could also prove that they are beginning to have less levels of stress, since they aren’t isolating themselves indoors. Having a higher level of productivity could prove that they are facing their fears and getting out there to create their own level of happiness.

In conclusion, this world is full of stressors, and within the disability population, these stressors could have more of an impact on them. It is all about how well we can face these stressors and/or cope with them. Life isn’t about the 10% of situations we are in, its about the 90% of how we react to them. If we live our lives with a more open mind and acquire the ability to understand other points of view, a lot of the stressors could have no affect on us. Also ensuring that whoever we are talking to understands our implications in interactions, we could diminish disputes between both parties. On top of all that, doing some sort of physical activity could prevent our minds from becoming stresses over little aspects of life. All in all, we all are faced with stressors each day, we must find some sort of stress prevention/management program that works for us. Just because one works for someone, doesn’t mean it is going to work for you, so we must find out what our minds grasp better than other practices.

Motivating Employees to Take Charge of Their Health at First South Financial Credit Union: Case Study Review

Cyral  Callender III, Tiara Marshall, Jessica Brown, Marissa Ayres

Department of Health, Purdue University Global

EF310 Current Trends in Exercise and Fitness-Aging Well Across the Life Span

    Unit 9 Final Group Assignment

    Professor Mark Maule

    August 2020

    Description (Tiara Marshall)

First South Financial Credit Union (FSFCU) is an institution out of Bartlett Tennessee, with over 100 employees and 15 branches spread throughout the state. Acknowledging that healthier employees are happier, FSFCU set out to create a health and wellness program to benefit their employees and their families. They started a program of their own, but found  it lackluster and wanted to do more. They enrolled in the National Healthy Worksite Program (NHWP) to beef up their existing program and gain additional skills in the implementation and effectiveness of their wellness programs. “CDC’s National Healthy Worksite Program is supported through the Affordable Care Act’s Prevention and Public Health Fund, and is designed to assist employers in building successful workplace wellness programs by implementing science-based disease prevention and wellness strategies to help reduce chronic diseases.” (cdc.gov, 2013)

Addressing Obesity in the Workplace and Community (Cyral Callender III)

When it comes to employers addressing obesity in the workplace, there are a few different factors that come into play. Within this case study, FSFCU states that their leadership members cared about employees’ well-being and knew that their healthier behaviors could benefit their family’s behaviors as well. This ensured their ability to reach further than just their organization, and be able to help their employees’ families, while improving their community at the same time. This would be good for business, since it would lower their health care costs within their organization. Management also believed that this would benefit their competitiveness within their field, by potentially recruiting healthier people from the beginning because of their beneficial wellness programs (Employers in action, 2019). According to Luann Heinen and Helen Darling, employers pay for more than 20% of all health care costs that involve their employees’, so if they give their employees the incentive to live a healthier lifestyle, all parties benefit from such endeavors (Heinen, et al, 2009).

Community Stakeholders and Interventions (Jessica Brown)

FSFCU used the CDC’s NHWP from 2013 to 2015 “with the hope that it could increase the effectiveness and scope of its health and wellness initiatives” (Employers in Action, 2019) which were already in place. The wellness committee at FSFCU decided on three (3) goals that focused specifically on weight management by using nutrition and physical activity with the help of the NHW Program. FSFCU also incorporated other outside organizations to help its employees reach their weight loss goals like the Arthritis Foundation’s Walk with Ease Program as well as participating in the Gibson Guitar 5k Race in Memphis Tennessee. The wellness committee created a healthy eating map that included locations within walking distance from work that offered healthy lunch options since there was not a cafeteria on site. This was intended to give information on healthy eating options from nearby establishments as well as encouraging physical activity by walking at lunch time.

    Motivational Strategies (Jessica Brown)

FSFCU used many different motivational strategies to help its employees make healthier choices. The wellness committee at FSFCU started a walking initiative that allowed for employees to earn points, and then trade them in for a variety of incentives such as free lunch or a casual dress day. The wellness committee also organized a year long Olympic Challenge with many individual competitions throughout the year. Gold, Silver, Bronze, and honorable mention awards were given by senior management at an award ceremony at the end of the challenge. The credit union also organized different activities that did not offer incentives but offered support and encouragement which provided motivation. A member from senior leadership started a boot camp at the largest branch with exercise classes twice weekly to help encourage physical activity. The committee organized a weight loss challenge that offered specific exercise challenges such as a plank challenge and a squat challenge to encourage participation and success.

    Obesity Support (Cyral Callender III)

FSFCU helped obese employees by setting goals for them, that they gained incentives from. They set the following goals: helping them lose 5-10% of their excess weight through physical activity, and decreasing the number of employees that are obese by 5-10%. Also, increasing their employee’s knowledge on nutrition and improving their mental and physical health through physical exercise (Employers in Action, 2019). They set an Olympic Challenge within their organization that consisted of a few different lifestyle changes. The Olympic challenge included the following: Eat five fruits and vegetables a day for five days a week, drink 64 ounces of water a day, engage in 30 minutes of moderate physical activity five days a week, and find some sort of stress relieving activity five days a week (Employers in Action, 2019). These goals, were well obtainable for any person that is obese or slightly overweight. Being able to obtain these goals, within a timely manner can also help with time management skills. By being able to manage their time better, another stress reliever can be achieved because of not stressing over having time to do certain things daily.

    Healthier Employees (Marissa Ayres)

By implementing the NHWP, FSFCU hoped to gain increased knowledge on nutrition, and a happier, healthier workplace environment. The entire point of the program was to not only influence the employees to be healthier, but influence their families as well.  Lowering Healthcare costs, and attracting new employees was another gain the company hoped to make. FSFCU created a workplace environment that encourages teamwork, while allowing for people to practice self-discipline to take charge of their personal health choices. In addition to this, FSFCU set specific, measurable, attainable, realistic, and timely goals for the employees. The company hoped to achieve a loss in their excess weight by 5%-10% (Employers in Action, 2019). This combined with the group challenges are why the program was successful in some aspects, and has the potential to increase success in the upcoming years.

The implementation of the program will continue to be successful if they keep implementing it. So far, in the year that they did it, people participated in the activities they set up. They did not reach the goal set of reducing the amount of overweight/ obese employees by 5%-10%, but people did lose weight. Over 80% of the employees gained knowledge from the nutrition and health information they received. Plus, 88% of them agreed that the procedures implemented had a positive impact on their mental health, which by itself is a huge gain for the company.  The program was effective because the employees actively participated in a 5k, the “Walk Across First South” challenge, and 25% of the employees won some type of medal for the challenges during the 2014 year.  Continuing with the challenges, will increase success in the years to come. 95% of the employees liked the changes, which shows adherence and effectiveness (Employers in Action, 2019). There is an environment of positive change, which is evidenced by all of the ideas and activities they had. Leadership has been involved from the beginning, which shows buy in from the highest levels, and will likely continue to have a positive impact on current and future employees.

Because FSFCU did not reach their goal of reducing the amount of employees who were overweight or obese, here are some ideas that would make them more successful. I think they could have the employees write the number of pounds they want to lose down, and mark it off once they have hit a certain weight goal. This would still keep their weight private to everyone else, and they can track it themselves. I believe that people are more successful when they have a tangible item to make adjustments to. Employees could also keep a food journal, where they can track food intake, and or an exercise journal, with weekly goals. Marking little goals like that off will make them more likely to lose those extra pounds, and stick with the new lifestyle changes. The company could also create a points system for doing small things like biking to work, stretching for 10 minutes, running a mile, hitting a calorie goal, drinking water, or many other choices. Whoever has the most points at the end of each month, or each week, could win a reward (White, n.d.) There are many apps that can track these small adjustments too, which could be another way to score points! If FSFCU continues with the program and tries some new ideas, I think they will see great results.

  • Transtheoretical Model of Behavioral Change

    Transtheoretical Model of Behavioral Change

The transtheoretical model of behavioral change can corelate with a lot of different aspects in our lives. From quitting a bad habit, to fitness and exercise, either way, you are working towards a change in your own behavior to reach a higher goal of healthier living. I feel as though people should investigate this model at least once in their lifetime to figure out that there is something out there that can help them work towards a change for the better.

For my assessment, I have been in the maintenance phase for quite some time. Per the Department of Health and Human Services for exercise guidelines, 150 minutes to 300 minutes of moderate-intensity exercise or 75 minutes of vigorous-intensity each week with three days of muscle and bone strengthening within that time (DHHS, 2018). I exceed these recommendations sometimes within the first couple days of the week. I wake up to a run each morning and go to the gym in the evenings for muscle strengthening, or more training for boxing. I find myself motivated daily, because I need to stay in shape in order to put on a good show during my boxing matches. I am usually up before the sun getting ready and stretching, including weekends so I can run outside. A barrier that I have faced in the past was the most recent pandemic shutting down the gyms. This made it to where my team and I couldn’t meet up at a facility to spar, or weight train. I do most of my cardio by myself, so that didn’t change, but with no gyms, we couldn’t get some sparring time in or pad work. Another barrier I could face in the future is business opportunities for my company that would result in me having to travel to new areas and getting me out of my normal schedule. I have been healthy in the past with minimal injuries, but I could see that being a factor as I age.

With Sally, I feel as though she is in the contemplation stage. I would say before her doctor visits she was in the pre-contemplation stage since she had no desire to exercise or change her diet. She made it clear in her audio recording that she has never really been interested in exercising since it is only for boys and it is too hot outside in Georgia. The only sports she could do like cheerleading and dance, she was too tall. Which I believe to be an excuse, since being tall would have been great for her to be in. Her level of motivation is nearly non-existent, but it is still there. Now that her doctor is telling her about how she may have to take insulin therapy and potentially blood pressure medication, she is beginning to want to make a change within the next six months making her to be in the contemplation stage.

The medication she takes for her diabetes, Metformin is an oral suspension medication that helps regulate high levels of blood sugar. According to The Mayo Clinic, people with type two diabetes can control their blood sugars with Metformin and having the right diet and exercise (Mayo Clinic, 2020). Of course, she would need to talk to her physician to take the right amount and balance it with her food and exercise. With her being an older gal, I would recommend doing more lower impact workouts such as ellipticals and swimming. She could even go for walks with her grandson or even play with him outside for the 60 minutes that are required for adolescents, in which it would benefit them both.

I find some of the barriers that she runs into is one of the main ones that people have, not enough time. With her working two jobs to make ends meet, she perceives that she never has time to exercise, but she does have extra time often to crochet. Also, the heat outside in Georgia is hot and humid, making her want to remain in the shade. She also hasn’t ever really had a plan for diet and exercise, so why start now? Some of her motivations would be to have a healthier lifestyle as she progresses in age. No body wants to wither away, especially when that have a young one to watch over and help raise. Another motivation would be that she doesn’t want to begin insulin therapy since she believes it would be more expensive. She wouldn’t have to worry about it if she just attempted to meet the requirements for physical activity each week, while being a positive role model for her grandson. And lastly, getting her blood pressure back to a normal level so she can avoid taking the blood pressure medication.

All these things are considerations that people must incorporate into their lives. Whether they are as physically active as me or have no desire to change their diet or exercise routines. According to the Department of Health and Human Services, about half of Americans have one or more preventable disease, that can be eased up with physical activity (DHHS, 2018). With the statistics continuing to rise, we need to get more information out there on how exercise can directly affect them in a positive way. All of this, while the media needing to portray a better picture of society so that people are aware of the numbers of auto-immune disorders from the lack of physical activity.

  • Another Client Scenario and Self Assessment

Another Client Scenario and Self Assessment

Before anyone begins a higher level of exercise in life, it is safe to take a few different assessments in order to evaluate the person and see if they are fit for it. And if they pass the assessments, what is the level that they would be able to reach while branching out into the fitness world. There are a lot of different factors that could play into them having to take it easy in the beginning, and even further down the road. Sometimes auto-immune disorders can hinder their ability to be extremely active. Or other hinderances, such as cardiorespiratory problems or past injuries. Some of these assessments are called The Exercise Readiness Questionnaire (ERQ), and the Risk Calculation Calculator (RCC) to name a couple (ExRx.net, 2020).

    Part One: Self-Assessment

I have been extremely physically active for quite some time throughout my life. There was a time where I started not being very physically active when my mother passed away, but that was a minimal amount of time. I have been in sports my whole life, and still participate in amateur boxing and mixed martial arts events at 27 years old. I figured these assessments would be easy for me, and wouldn’t impose any restrictions, or contacts with a physician. I want to carry this level of activity for when I get older.

After completing The Exercise Readiness Questionnaire, I answered no to all the questions. With that being said, I don’t need to reach out to a physician, as long as I take the progression gradually. Since I am already active, I wouldn’t have to be too gradual at all. With the Risk Calculation Calculator, it was along the same lines as the last assessment. Since I haven’t had any of the diseases or chronic issues that were listed, I am good to continue exercise at any level of intensity as I would like. The medical clearance was pretty much non-existent as well since I am a healthy, able body.

According to The Department of Health and Human Resources the physical guidelines for adults in America are 150 minutes a week of moderate-intensity, or 75 minutes of vigorous-intensity aerobic activities. As well as two days of muscle strengthening a week to improve bone strength and muscle strength (DHHR, 2008). I would also add in some proprioceptive workouts to enhance stabilization, balance, and joint health. I find myself to be beyond those guidelines by far, since I run for 30 minutes, or cycle for an hour every day. On top of high intensity training for boxing and mixed martial arts, as well as muscle strengthening at least three times a week. Any moment I find myself having some extra time, I go workout, whether it is in the gym, or at home.

    Part Two Client Assessment

Justin is another story, with him being a younger age and being overweight, he may have more concerns later down the road. Being overweight takes a toll on an individual in so many more ways than one. They can have heart problems, higher stress levels, and even auto immune disorders such as diabetes. Since he is young, I went ahead and answered no on all the questions in The Exercise Readiness Questionnaire since there hasn’t been any problems along those lines listed. However, those problems could change later down the road if he doesn’t become more physically active and begin losing weight. With the Risk Calculation Calculator, he had the same answers as me, but his progression into physical activity is going to have to be more gradual. He can’t just jump right into vigorous activity for a few different reasons. First off, it could be really discouraging when he can’t finish a workout due to too much fatigue. Secondly, it will be hard for him to reach levels of comfort while working out if he jumps his workouts to high. Lastly, his body is capable of doing what ever his mind will allow, he must allow his mind to operate at that level for his body to function properly. He will need to have the proper coaching on what to do.

According to the Department of Health and Human Services, children and adolescents should perform 60 minutes of physical activity a day, with part of that being vigorous activity three days a week, as well as muscle and bone strengthening on three days of the week (DHHS, 2008). During the football season he may be meeting these guidelines, but that only last during the fall season, especially in middle school. On his two days of P.E. in school, he isn’t making it to the guidelines of being 60 minutes a day. His spare time goes to studying or video games, as well as with a tutor, he may think he doesn’t have the time to complete 60 minutes a day of activity. However, through determination, he will make time to complete these guidelines with the proper workout regimen. If I were to train him, or just give him a foundation to build on, I would start him off slowly. We would need to eliminate his sedentary lifestyle, by setting a schedule and practice time management skills. It would make things easier to stay in shape during the off season for football, if he stayed focus to meet these guidelines. I would encourage him to get some of his time through jogging or cycling in the mornings before school and take a weight training course as an elective in school. This would help him reach his goals by the next football season. The last 30 days has been a hinderance since his parents put him in tutoring. It even goes past that, with his elders that are around. If he had better role models to look up to, he would begin finding that being active and eating right is what he needs to do as a child while becoming a grown adult.

So, with these assessments, a lot of people may be discouraged if they answer yes on any of the questions. Or if they are worried about going to the gym out of fear of judgment from others. If only they could understand that most of the people at the gym don’t judge people that are out of shape, they are actually an inspiration. Personally, when I see someone attempting to better their life, it keeps me motivated and I would even be willing to help them. It is all about crossing that Mind to Body divide and eliminate anything that is known that ruins your health.

  • Check Your Sources!

    Check Your Sources!

The internet is one of all our means of obtaining information in todays day in age. However, even though there is all this information throughout the world wide web, there are a lot of people that try to portray false information. This means that you must check your resources when trying to gather information, otherwise you may be relaying the same false information. There are a few different aspects when looking for proper information, such as the type of webpage you’re on, or if it lists the authors and date of publication. Typically, if the webpage is a .GOV, .NET, .EDU, or .ORG they tend to be more credible than the .COM webpages. Unless again, the author and date of publication is on the page. I am going to review a few sources that are credible, as well as one that is not.

One of my favorite websites to visit is the Onnit Academy website for a various amount of reasons. They are known nationwide for their workout systems, supplements, nutrition assistance, and training courses to be able to be certified in a variety of types of workouts. According to Aubrey Marcus, one of the founders of Onnit, they specialize in kettlebells, maces and clubs, battle ropes, barbell workouts, and even at home bodyweight workouts (Aubrey Marcus, 2020). Their website is easy to navigate, with different subcategories to select that open more information that everyone desires to see. They are also the founders of a lot of their own supplements like alpha brain, which is a nootropic that helps with brain function and clarity. Same as their proteins and other typical types of supplements that one would use for exercise and fitness gains. I personally know that this is a reputable source since I have done a lot of my own research on the owners of this Academy. From their own podcasts, to others like The Joe Rogan Experience, they have touched on the information that has went into the production of their products and how they have obtained them through years of their own research.

Another great site would be the National Academy of Sports Medicine which offers certification programs with their own type of fitness education, which is the site that I used to acquire my Personal Trainers Certificate. Their OPT model which stands for Optimum Performance Training Model is a great way to break down different types of workouts for separate levels of training. They state that in order to reach optimal training, a trainer will need 6-9 months to complete their OPT Model (NASM., 2020). They have different types of ways to obtain the certificate, which carries a high level of accreditation. I completed the 10-week study course that was broken down into separate weeks, which made the means of accessibility a lot easier than meeting deadlines daily. I know they are reputable because their domain is a .ORG entity, and they have information about how many people that have been certified through their program. The academy has also been working on this line of work for over 30 years, making them very knowledgeable about this type of career.

Along the same lines of NASM, The American Counsel of Exercise is another reputable source for personal training certification. They are a .ORG domain as well, making them in the category of reliable sources of information. They offer a variety of certifications as well that vary in pricing and you can do monthly payments, to make it more affordable over time. Their websites states that their mission is to get people moving and shows all their values which include: Honesty, Integrity, Ingenuity, Passion, Collaboration, Connectivity, and Continuous Learning and Development (ACE., 2020). They have certified over 90,000 personal trainers within the United States and continue to create movements to help better the health and wellness of our communities.

American College of Sports Medicine is another great reputable source as well. Again, with their domain being a .ORG, making them an organization that has been around for quite some time. Their website states that they have been around since 1954 and is one of the most inexpensive training certifications on the market today (ACSM, 2020). They have a subcategory that shows their different types of certifications and compares them with pricing from other personal training certification websites, which is something that the others don’t offer. Their website also gives you assistance in finding a job with your personal trainer’s certificate within your area. The accreditation that you can receive from this certificate is quite well, matching the other sites, but with half the price.

A site that you can find within the same searches on the web, that isn’t quite that reputable is GymTalk.com (GymTalk, 2016). They discuss different aspects of training and how you could be doing it wrong. Even though it has a date of publication on it which is almost five years old, it doesn’t offer who the author is. As well as it being a blog, which most times doesn’t offer the most reliable information. They also have ads all over for companies that are trying to make a quick dollar by fooling the consumer with their products that may not even work. The site is just all around not a good place to acquire information.

So, when searching for your information on the web, make sure you check all the information that you are using, especially if it is for something that is important. Of course, you are going to run into a lot of biased information as well, especially if it comes to politics. So, just ensure that you look at both sides of the information you are acquiring, and again, check your sources. You don’t want to relay wrong information to your peers, colleagues, or other classmates, so know your information, even about the information that you are receiving.

  • Manager Ethical Scenario

    Manager Ethical Scenario

As the manager of an establishment, I have obviously proven my worth to the owner to the point of where they trust me to run the place, and to make sure that all customers are taken care of in an equal manner. First things first, I would start with the hiring process. I would hire individuals that are hard-working and motivated to work their hardest and to their best ability every single day they clock in. They would have to be great team players and be able to thrive in a team type setting with no sort of judge mental views towards others. They would have to be extremely respectful and have the manners of a mature adult. So, I am saying that I wouldn’t have to worry about an employee not wanting to do their job, over some persons political prestige. They would be more than willing to serve each customer to the same level as the next no matter their race, sex, political views, or religion. In the case of such events taking place, I would have a talk with the employee or employees. I would let them know that they know what their job is, and what needs to be done to get it handled no matter the situation. They’re should be no set back from what this politician says in his political views. He is just like every other individual that is here to enjoy a good home cooked meal in a very nice, respectable establishment. Just because he is in the running for some sort of office, doesn’t mean he isn’t someone that has a good taste for food. If the employee still refuses, then I would take matters into my own hands. Being the manager, I would take the initiative to get the job done, in a timely, and efficient manner that we call for at our restaurant. I wouldn’t treat this politician any different than any other customer that we have had that day. After serving said politician, I would inform the employee about how easy it is to complete a job without having any type of biased views for anybody or anything. And I would tell them that this type of thing will not happen again, and if it does then refusal to work will lead to permanent termination. And it would be more than legal to fire somebody over refusing to work.

The ethical reasoning it feel would co inside with this would be Prima Facie Duties. I incorporate this theory for the reasoning that we must obey in a general way before any other considerations are put into account. My employee should obey the customer satisfaction trend that we have at the restaurant, before they put their tiny bit of political views out into the universe. The employee should have treated the politician just like every other customer, and then talked about how rough it was after the fact, instead of refusing to work. Get the job done, and then discuss the problem later when the matter at hand is taken care of. Then at that point, it more than likely wouldn’t be that big of a deal to the employee. Who knows, maybe they would find joy in working with the politician.

  • Ethics of The Death Penalty

    Ethics of The Death Penalty

When it comes to the death penalty, there is a vast amount of different views on this topic. People think it is morally correct, and there are others that find it to be against all like values. I personally think it is something that should be enough to the people that fit into the category. There are all sorts of criminals out there, from people that make a mistake, to people that think it is all that they know. When it comes to the people that make a mistake, whether due to being in addiction, or by causing an accident, their mistake should be proven, and rehabilitation thereafter. But to the ones that have the criminal mentality, and aren’t ever going to change, they should be considered for the death penalty, especially if they are a habitual offender. Ones that have conducted premeditated murder, kidnap, or mutilation, then they for sure fall under the category of the death penalty. Serial killers as well, where it might not be premeditated, but is done to numerous individuals over a period of time. All those criminals I feel as though should fall under the death penalty. Ones that may have killed someone in an accident while being under the influence, should be given the chance to be rehabilitated, and if they continue to use or drink, then criminal action should follow.

I feel as though it is very unilateralistic type of thinking, so that we keep our society safe. But within that keeping the society safe, we should also consider the ones that are suffering from addictions. The ones that can’t be treated through treatment, should fall under the death penalty if the continue to recidivate. But some are ready to change, we shouldn’t give them the death penalty when it could potentially be the mistake that they had to learn from. To keep the entire community safe, we must look out for the ones that are under a horrible spell…. addiction.

  • Ethics of Chemo Therapy

    Ethics of Chemo Therapy

The bioethics problem that I have decided to write about that has the biggest impact on me would have to be about the use of chemotherapy. I understand it is a wonderful medicine practice that helps save lives, but it is only a temporary fix that causes a long-term problem for the individual. After the completion of chemotherapy, a huge portion of people survive that tend to go through such a horrible experience. Putting someone through that amount of pain just isn’t ethical. The emotional damage that it puts on the families of the patient is huge, having to see their loved one go through so much pain, it is unbearable. The ones that end up surviving the treatment, usually are just signing a contract to acquire leukemia at a later date. That is what happened to my mother when I was just a boy. She had been diagnosed with Hodgkins lymphoma, and went through chemotherapy, not once, but three different time. Who knows, maybe it was because she did it more than once, but when I was 16, she died of leukemia. The amount of damage it does to the bone marrow and the blood in the body, they usually always contract leukemia later on.

The ethical theory that I am going to go with, is the divine command theory. I know religious beliefs vary in each individual, but I am a firm believer that when it is a person’s time, it is their time. And with modern medicine fighting off these infections in our worldly bodies it may give us extra time with them, but it will always circle back to the same thing. Just prolonging the inevitable. That is what happened to my mother, don’t get me wrong, I am glad I was blessed with the time I had with her, but I wish I wouldn’t have seen her in all that pain. I feel as though that is the best theory to go along with this, if I am wrong, please let me know.
