What are Psychedelic Mushrooms and What can They do for us?

Introduction
Psilocybin, otherwise known as magic mushrooms, “Bammers”, psychedelic shrooms, and even a plant of the Gods. I am sure there are all different kinds of names for these on the streets since they were considered a schedule 1 drug back during Nixon’s presidency and the War on drugs. Schedule 1 drugs in the United States are those that are purported to have the following traits: 1) The drug or other substance has a high potential risk of abuse 2) The drug or other substance has no currently accepted medical use in treatment within the United States. I don’t know if you have tried them, but you won’t want to do them twice in one day, or every day at that! So, the probability of abuse is nearly non-existent! Furthermore, there are so many more medicinal properties than almost all “Big Pharma” medicines, without any side effects.
In June of 1971, Nixon established that drug abuse was “Public Enemy Number One”, with psilocybin mushrooms being among that list. However, the thing about mycology (which is the study of all fungi) began making some progress towards positive effects of almost all safe mushrooms, and psychedelic mushrooms. Magic Mushrooms and other mushrooms such as Lion’s Mane, Red Reishi, Oyster, and so much more have shown proof of enhancing all kinds of human qualities. Mental clarity, immunological enhancement, neurogenesis, neuro-generation, neuro-regeneration, and even neuroplasticity has all been shown to enhance our minds. Reishi is even called natures Xanax since it helps lower anxiety. Neurogenesis is the origination of newborn nerve cells from stem cells within our body. The more active cells we have the better we will be in almost all aspects of life. Now Neuro-generation and Neuro Regeneration, does exactly as it sounds, generating new neurons, while regenerating helps atrophied neurons. And finally, to top it all off, neuroplasticity which consists of synaptogenesis where more nerves begin branching out more conduits for more connections (JRE, 2019). Neuroplasticity, in other words, is the brain’s ability to adapt to new situations or changes in their environment. Psychedelic Mushrooms just make you feel like a happy person, in almost everything you do.
How Do They Work?
The way these mushrooms work is quite exceptional actually. People used to think that you were just basically getting food poisoning, which in too high of a dose, you would just raulf it up. But even then, the effects will still last. We will touch base on Micro-dosing, moderate dosing, and even heroic dosing which all have their own benefits within themselves. But first, the chemical response that is happening in our bodies. There are over 200 mushrooms that contain psilocybin which is the naturally occurring chemical compound that makes you experience a psychedelic spectacle. Psilocybin is considered a pro-drug, which is a compound that is inactive by itself, but when metabolized, it can turn into a pharmacological compound in the body (Psilocin). When we consume psilocybin-containing mushrooms (which is the most terrible tasting experience, if it isn’t boiled into a tea, or put in chocolates or capsules), our bodies begin metabolizing the psilocybin into psilocin, which is actually able to bind to our serotonin receptors. Serotonin’s chemical structure is fairly similar to that of psilocin, but it is a monoamine neurotransmitter, which is the source of all those wonderful happy feelings we get from something we enjoy doing, or around people we love being around. It can also be boosted through chemical assistance, where we can establish a new sense of well-being in this life we live. Psilocin is actually considered an agonist, meaning it can initiate a physiological response for our serotonin receptors (Haze and Mandrake, 2016). The following picture will show how closely related the chemical molecule structures are to one another.

So closely related, don’t ya think! (Science Direct, n.d.)
As a neurotransmitter it can assist in relaying messages from one part or section of the brain, to the other. Research from back in 2016, states that there is a sensory overload that happens when someone “trips”, which is caused from the psilocin. This makes the brain become more hyperconnected; that is, it allows for greater communication between parts of the brain that otherwise wouldn’t talk to each other. The process is called Synesthesia phenomena which is said to reorganize connections and strengthen weaker ones, enhancing our mental acuity. It is also something that may make your senses interact with one another. Such as, if you hear music, you may see shapes, or if you hear the name Jake, you may see the color green. It is something that brings all your senses in line with one another, creating a higher acuity of your senses (Haze and Mandrake, 2016). You will see me constantly go back to primal times, comparing what these mushrooms may have done, and how they potentially corelate with our existence today (Stoned Ape Theory), but we will get back to that. This Synesthesia may have helped our primal ancestors to hunt and kill food, pick other certain plants, and even stay alive amidst so many predators.
Our minds have evolved to constantly filtering out any non-useful stimuli in our new world, enabling us to focus on the important task of living our lives, or simply being a human being. It saves our minds resources, and extracts things that can be considered trivialities. Not everyone counts how many cars are being tugged behind a train when stopped at a train crossing. Certain areas of the brain that inhibit distracting stimuli and help maintain our attention, such as the hypothalamus, have been proven to show decreased activity when under the effects of psilocin. Another area is called the claustrum (derived from the Latin word for “hidden or shut away”), which is an extremely thin sheet of neurons deep within the cortex, yet it reaches out to every other region in the brain. The true purpose is also “hidden away”, however there are a few speculations of why it’s there, and what its true purpose is. One is from Francis Crick of DNA-discovery, which he believed the claustrum is responsible for our awareness and sense of self, or the seat of our consciousness (John Hopkins, 2020). With this in mind, Johns Hopkins tested 15 people, whom some took psilocybin, while the others received a placebo. They found that the ones that took the psilocybin, showed a reduced neuronal activity in the claustrum by 15% to even 30%. The lowered activity seemed to be associated with stronger subjective effects of the drug, such as emotional and mystical experiences. The researchers also found that the drug changed the correspondence between the claustrum and brain regions that involve hearing, attention, decision-making, and remembrance (John Hopkins, 2020). This is what ties in with what people claim as typical effects of psychedelics, including feelings of being connected to everything, and more importantly, reduced senses of self or egotistical behavior. New technology, such as the fMRI (functional magnetic resonance imaging) have given researchers the ability to track certain brain activity. Thus, making more breakthroughs on certain effects of mind-altering drugs, such as psilocybin mushrooms, and many more. There has been proven research that shows that they can help manage, or even cure people with PTSD, Depression, Anxiety, and even substance abuse disorder. And to think these are still in the “Schedule One” drug category.
These regions of the brain are usually some of the most active, which play important roles of our sense of self, organizing incoming sensory information, and regulating internal impulses. Aldous Huxley claims that each person is capable at any moment to remember everything that has ever happen to him/her and can even perceive everything that is happening everywhere in the universe at that certain moment. He also believes that the central nervous system and the brain is to protect us from being overwhelmed and confused by this mass of largely useless and irrelevant information that we don’t currently have any use for (Haze and Mandrake, 2016). Usually after the effects wear off, these connections go back to normal, and we won’t experience synesthesia anymore. Most people claim that they feel dulled out after experiencing something so marvelous, and even eye opening, when it comes to sense of ego. There are other ways of reaching this feeling that is being tested currently too. These are pharmacologically similar to psilocybin, such as lysergic acid diethylamide (LSD) and phenethylamine-containing alkaloids (mescaline).
Different Types of our Mushie Friends
Enough about the anatomy of the human body, and words that are extremely hard to say at first. That stuff can continue to drag on, and on, and on……… and on. To start this off, we will touch base on what mushrooms start off as. If you are familiar, you will see most mushrooms have a long stipes (stalks/stems), and convex heads or “caps”. Typically, you will see gills up underneath these caps, and this is where the mushroom stores, these tiny microscopic spores (poet and didn’t know it!). When the mushroom matures fully, thousands of these tiny spores will fall to the earth, causing more mushroom growth. That is why you will see mushroom cultivators, smack the cap before taking the mushroom from its base. However, instead of acting like seeds, and gather energy through photosynthesis–they germinate to produce a mass of interwoven, single-cell wide structures known as hyphae, which is also considered as Shiro. A collective mass of hyphae is known as mycelium.
Mycelium is the plural form of the word Mycelia, which has New Latin and Greek origins, literally meaning more than one. In order to understand the greatness of mycelium, we have to get a little more technical. Fungi absorbs nutrients from the environment such as a substrate (certain conditions of soil), a log, etc., through its mycelium in a two-stage process. First off, those little hyphae (which reminds me of Hefe) secrete enzymes into the decaying wood or other substrate. They break down biological polymers into smaller units called monomers. The mycelium then uses a combination of facilitated diffusion and active transport to absorb these monomers (The Conscious Club, 2017). There is so much more that goes into mycelium, that you can look up for yourself. Some people believe mycelium to be the way that all fungi life communicate in the forest. Fun Fact: The largest single fungal organism is found in the Malheur National Forest, and it belongs to the species called Armillaria Ostoyee. It covers a whopping three and a half square miles or 9 square kilometers in the state of Oregon! Paul Stamets has even found that mycelium can help retain our bee population, to continue pollinating the earth. By protecting them from detrimental diseases that hinder their wing growth. Really interesting stuff if you ask me!
The following is a progression of a mushroom, from the beginning mushroom spore, all the way to the developing fruiting body that you typically will see above ground. Even though the larger, more branched out aspect of the mushroom is below ground.

Quite the Cycle (Mycologic, n.d.)
Though there are many different species of psilocybin containing mushrooms, we will only touch base on the main species that hold the most affect. The most potent types of psilocybin containing mushrooms belong to the genus Psilocybe. You can find all kinds of information of the different types of mushrooms, and their poisonous look alikes, in Paul Stamets book: Psilocybin Mushrooms of The World: An Identification Guide (1996). All of these different species carry three different “ingredients”, Psilocybin, Psilocin, and Baeocystin. There are 12 species but there are only 7 that have high enough percentages to account for: Psilocybe Azurescens, Psilocybe Bohemica, Psilocybe Semilanceata, Psilocybe Baeocystis, Psilocybe Cyanescens, Psilocybe Tampanensis, and the most common Psilocybe Cubensis. We won’t go into the description of each, however, they are in order from the most potent, to the least potent in all three “ingredients”. Go take a look at the full descriptions if you have time.
Dosing Types: Micro, Moderate, and Heroic Dosages
The thing about mushrooms being blacklisted all those years ago, they weren’t able to be assessed by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), to find the proper dosing for an actual supplement. It isn’t like your traditional dietary or nutritional supplement that you will find at the local drug store, where recommended daily allowance has been arduously tested. So, the following dosages aren’t proven, and should be taken lightly, especially since there are numerous factors that must come into play. What is the species? What is the potency of that specific mushroom? Is it consumed wet or dry? How much do you personally weigh? Of course, there are all kinds of unknowns out there, and skepticism makes people think it is all just for the “hippies”. In some of the pioneering psilocybin studies done at Johns Hopkins University, controlled doses of psilocybin were administered to patients.
***Let it be known, I do not perform any illegal activity, and I do not suggest that anyone does anything illegal. This is just information that I have gathered for the purpose of education. NONE of this information has been tested by the Food and Drug Administration and should not be used as a remedy for any mental illnesses. Please consult with you physician, therapist, or psychiatrist for any means possible to help with your specific illness. I need to notify you of this before you proceed. This disclosure is here for your safety and understanding (and mine of course)***
Micro-Dosing
Micro-dosing is exactly as it sounds, where you take just enough to have the mental effects, without the full body high and altered visual perception. It just enacts the happy feeling that you get from taking a larger dose. According to Curative Mushrooms (2020), A proper dosage for micro dosing would be 1/10th of a gram, which may change to your certain body type. So, remember, there are 1000 milligrams in one gram, so you would take 100 mgs for the traditional micro dose. There is also the body weight method, which you take .25 mg per kilogram of bodyweight.
I will also bring in the infamous Paul Stamets, and his patented micro dose formula, where he stacks psilocybin with Lion’s Mane and niacin. Lions’ mane is another delicacy mushroom that is legal and has shown proof of helping with nerve regenerative properties. Other benefits of Lions Mane are as follows: Increases memory, increases focus, increases concentration, Anti-inflammatory, supports gut health, improves mood, increases energy levels, and Supports insulin sensitivity (Microdosing Institute, n.d.). So, this mushroom alone, can give anyone a lot of supporting health benefits. His stack is as follows:
DAYS 1-4: Micro dosing days
- 0.1 to 0.2 grams of dried magic (psilocybin) mushrooms or 0.5 to 1.5 grams of fresh magic truffles
- 500mg to 1000mg of high-quality Lion’s Mane extract powder (or manufacturer’s recommended dose)
- 50 –200 mg of niacin Vit B3 ‘Flush’
DAY 5-7: Non-micro dosing days
- No micro dose
- Optional: Niacin
- Optional: Continue implementing Lion’s Mane
CYCLE: continue for four weeks
RESET: Stop micro dosing with psilocybin for two to four weeks. You may continue supplementing with Lion’s Mane during this reset (Microdosing Institute, n.d.)
Moderate Dosing
Again, it is exactly how it sounds, a moderate dose. You will find all different kinds of numbers when it comes to a moderate dose. Curative Mushrooms (2020) states that a typical moderate dose would be 1-4 grams. While others say anywhere from one gram to 3.5 grams. That is where the traditional eighth that most people enjoy taking comes from. This is a practice that can be conducted every so often, such as every month or two. All depending on your schedule and ability. You won’t have the full dissolution of self that you would a heroic dose, but you will feel the effects, both physically, visually, and emotionally. That nice word, synesthesia comes back into play at this dose, where your senses begin to cross. Of course, there isn’t many studies conducted on this dosage practice, since again, they are illegal…. But I am positive that there will be more as the days pass. This helps keep your empathy levels higher throughout the time span in between dosages.
Heroic Dosing-Lets Get Ready to Rumble!!
Now for the large dosage, that completely dissolves your sense of self. The dissolution of self sounds intimidating; however, it is only for the duration of the trip, and there may be some lingering feelings for a few days after. This feeling is something that is thought of coming from the claustrum (as stated earlier) where it is thought of being our seat of consciousness. It can be more looked at as, the dissolution of our ego, instead of our self. Because, well, everyone always remembers their name, and who they are after the fact. Sometimes you may begin questioning who you are, and what your purpose is in this finite life. But more often than not, it always pushes you towards something more positive. You may learn that you must quit putting so much effort in finding the negative aspects of life and begin focusing more on the positive aspects of it. Or maybe even quit taking yourself so seriously and start having a little more fun in life. Another trait that people have found they experience after a heroic dose, is they become more empathetic with the people around them. When we can start feeling other people’s pains, then we may even be able to stop being the root cause of their pain. It is sort of like an eye-opening experience, helping us to be a bit more introspective in our actions. When you begin looking more inwards, you may be able to find that you are at fault for your own tribulations. Thus, creating an avenue to changing for the better.
I will bring up good ole curative mushrooms, yet again. According to Oliver, a heroic dose would be 5-7 grams (2020). However, there are also others claims of it being anything above seven dry grams of psilocybin. It is kind of like the old saying with beans: “Beans, Beans, the magical fruit, the more you eat, the more you toot”. So, besides the tooting part… it is a lot the same. Taking anything above six dry grams, you will find yourself in an altered dimension almost. Again, this sounds scary, but it really isn’t that bad. You will see the whole world waving in a sense, which is really neat when you look at the horizon, or even some cool art. Synesthesia begins to set in, where you think you are hearing colors, and seeing sounds.
Johns Hopkins has found that one heroic dose has shown to have long lasting effects, where people claimed to have a personality change. They claimed to have a more openness feeling when it came to life, looking at life in a whole new lens almost. Openness includes traits such as imagination, aesthetics, feelings, abstract ideas, and general broad-mindedness. They also claimed to have more of a spiritual side after the experience. Most of the individuals were over the age of 30, which it is thought that we don’t really make any drastic personality changes after 30 years old. These lasting affects lasted anywhere from 12 months to 15 months in the 51 people that they tested. Reduction of anxiety, fear, and sad thoughts was also found throughout this study. So, I mean, why wouldn’t you want to do this every six months to a year? Of course, it needs to be in a comfortable environment, where you have someone that is sober (and knows what the experience is like) to be able to keep everyone and everything in line. People have even tried conducting therapy sessions during these experiences, to help guide people into changing certain traits of their lives.
If this stuff interests you, then I know you have heard of the word (or person), Shaman. A Shaman is someone that is believed to have a connection with good and evil spirits or is influenced by the afterlife/before life. They typically enter a trance state during a ritual to practice divination and healing for the people participating in the ritual. You may also look at them as your guide into your psychedelic experience, where when you begin to venture off, they can center you back into your purpose. They believe that they can obtain healing powers whilst in the ritual, for almost all of the people around them. They are admired as one of the more powerful human beings in this present life. You can find the biggest influence in these people in remote areas of the Amazonian Forest. Where nature is more important than the smart phone or computer you are currently using. They are these peoples Google in a sense, where they can give them answers to the most important questions about life. These people are found to have almost nothing in their possessions but are some of the happiest people on the face of the earth. There must be a connection to the psychedelic experiences they endure.
Stoned Ape Theory
First proposed by a main stream ethnobotanist Terence McKenna (1946-2000) in his early 90’s book “Food of the Gods,” the basic concept is that the consumption of psychedelic fungi may have played a crucial role in the development of human mind and culture (Lamb, 2021). Of course, he believed that the “Stoned Ape Hypothesis” misrepresented his theory, but it is still the name that stuck. Terrance and his brother Dennis McKenna (who is an ethnopharmacologist) must have had some DEEP, late-night conversations when it comes to something as intense as this theory. Dennis claims that they put forth the evidence during their conversations to come up with this theory. Long story short, the hypothesis suggests we owe the emergence of language and self-reflection to ancient, sustained consumption of psilocybin mushrooms all those years ago. They know that the human brain doubled in size about two million years ago, which is of course evidence that would need to be dug into more, but we will just roll with it for the sake of description. It is also thought to have been apart of the “Creative Explosion” that happened around 40,000 years ago. Where homo sapiens began living in their own creations, making tools, and hunting in a more innovative way. This again made the development even faster all the way up to where we are today.
With the effects of psilocybin making our mental acuity higher, and deeper visual perception, they may have been able to think and react faster. This would make them be less susceptible of getting attacked by larger predators, or even finding, and killing their food for daily rations. The long tale of Vikings drinking ale and eating mushrooms before battle runs congruent with his hypothesis. Where it is thought that they fought harder, moved faster, seen incoming attacks, and even weren’t afraid of death. Of course, none of us lived in this era, and the probability of finding more documentation is slim, so it will remain that… a theory. If we could travel back in time and find that we adapted to our surroundings because of mushrooms, then I bet they would get legalized that same time. But I guess, if we had the technology to time travel, then our superficial problems wouldn’t exist anymore… or we would create even more problems!
Summary
So, I know that if you are reading this, then you are obviously interested in this topic. And honestly, throughout the duration of this article, I told myself that I wouldn’t take a stab at big pharma. But in my opinion, I think marijuana, and psilocybin mushrooms were both outlawed so that “man-made” remedies could begin to corner the market. I feel like they already knew about the medicinal properties of both these NATURAL remedies, but they knew they couldn’t regulate it, since they could easily be grown at home. Sometimes I feel like money turns most people into greedy individuals. Most man-made products have been proven to lead to more side effects than the initial illness that is trying to be healed. Don’t get me wrong, I absolutely love innovation, and it is one of the best times to be alive, however, I feel like we are all being controlled by the elites of our world. They may not think they are, because that is what they were taught as they were coming up. But it all started somewhere. It only takes 30 years to completely change the outlook of an entire generation, and I believe we are beginning to yet again, change the outlook, of an entire generation. If mushrooms didn’t get blacklisted all those years ago, just think about the amount of research that could have been done by now. I don’t know about you, but I truly believe that if it worked all those years ago, why ON EARTH wouldn’t it work now!? I think if every person on earth took a heroic dose once a year, our world could potentially be a better place. The absence of ego would bring more people together. The increase in empathy would make people think before they acted in a negative way. And finally, the closeness that we could all experience with our fellow humanoid, would rid us all of division. We wouldn’t all resort to tribalism, where it is thought that we all MUST reside on one side or the other, or one country or the other. Instead, we could all reside in one harmonious connection of fellow humans, who are all on the same, good ole’ Pursuit of Happiness.
I hope you enjoyed my article, and I look forward to hearing any feedback you may have. Please stay tuned to more information on mushrooms, not only Psilocybin mushrooms, but all medicinal mushrooms. If you know of any new research pertaining to this topic, please feel free to reach out to me at any time via email, socials or anywhere else. Just search the unique name, you will find it.
Have an excellent day, and remember, “Every situation you are in, is a test of who YOU truly are”

Post-Script: The world is just a reflection of yourself. Whatever you put out into the world, it will get reflected onto you. If you stare into a mirror, and you hate what you see, you cannot attack the image, but you can change it. Whenever you transform, the world will transform around you. In a state of non-acceptance, you will attack the image. But if you accept yourself as is, then your image won’t attack you. Mental illness is not the problem, you are the problem. As long as your Ego mind thinks of it that way, you will never get better. DO NOT blame life for treating you unfairly, but do not blame yourself either, all that is, is resistance.
Much love people.

Who is Cyral I. Callender III

Hello my friends! Having my Bachelors degree in Health and Wellness, I have studied all different types of–well– Health and Wellness. Everything stemming from physical activity, to anatomy and physiology, proper diet habits, and stages of change. While also studying the possibility of integrative medicines or alternative medicines to Western Societal Medicine. Traditional Chinese Medicines worked all those centuries ago, so I mean, It has to work in some way, shape, or form. I started my college career as a diesel mechanic at my local college, but I did some digging into my future goals and desires. I knew I didn’t want to work on heavy machinery for the rest of my life. Getting doused in oil, smashing my hands taking off a bolt, or digging through the cold snow to get to a certain part. Nuh uh… that wasn’t for me anymore, my time of field work was finished. I was always told that if you do something you love, then you will never work a day in your life. I asked myself, “What was something that I absolutely loved doing”. One, physical activity and healthier lifestyles. Two, helping every person that I possibly can throughout the duration of my time on earth. And finally, constantly learning new ways to make those two aspects of life a reality and relevant to the current time. I searched for schools within my range of travel, however, the closest place would have been Denver, Colorado. (Which is a four hour drive!) You know the saying that everything happens for a reason? Well at the very same time that I was searching for schools, I had an opportunity of a life time of starting my own small business with a friend. I knew we would have made this partnership work, so I couldn’t leave him behind. So, as I was building the limited Liability Company, I was searching for online schools. All while working 10 hours a day, attending in-person college, getting my workouts in, and fitting in small stretches of sleep here and there. One night, with my eyes heavy, I found a school through the slits of my eyes, just before they closed for the night. Purdue University Global was accentuated in its black and gold colors on my screen. I quickly requested more information, and dosed off right on the couch of my apartment. Just to wake up five hours later to start my day again with a solid workout. I got the grants, and funding to attend Purdue University Global for my bachelors in Health and Wellness. It hasn’t been easy. Being a father of three (almost four), a small business owner (which did all the accounting, data, and traditional work), a board member for the State of Wyoming and for our local disc golf group, and to finish it off, training as a combat sports player. Fast forward four years, in May of 2022, I finally graduated. I must say, the long-term gratification of finally graduating was the best feeling in the world, after my children being born of course. With my past history of being a delinquent in my late adolescent/early 20’s, that feeling was more intense than any substance known to man. The possibility of changing, and becoming who you want to be is obtainable, no matter how deep you think you are. It isn’t easy, but you must be willing to put forth the effort. I am just a casual guy, trying to assist anyone I possibly can into changing their lives for the better. Please reach out at any time of day, no matter what it is. Much love and respect, and I appreciate the support. Thanks for reading 🙂

Journal Entry

March 12, 2021
I am going to use Maslows Hierarchy of needs since it is how I have gotten this far in life, with nothing. Back in 2016, I had been sent to a boot camp program, instead of going to prison for some bad decisions I made while drinking too much. This changed the course of my life forever in so many ways. Getting out in 2018, I literally had a bag of clothes to my name, and one old worn out pair of sneakers. That is where is started my journey of making it up the hierarchy of needs. I got a job within the first five days of getting out, which got me started on my 90 day plan that I had set forth for myself. Being in a different city from where I grew up, I had only one friend that I was able to stay with for a little while. Within 30 days, I had secured transportation, more clothes, food and drinks, and all my necessities in life. I quickly moved up the ladder to the psychological needs with belongingness and love needs. I found the woman of my dreams that I have been with since, in which I am always finding new ways to love her, and our beautiful daughter. My esteem needs began to climb as well through being able to make the right acquaintances to start doing what I love again, combat sports. I started winning my mixed martial arts and boxing competitions, which gave me a sense of accomplishment. And then in 2019, literally one year after getting released from bootcamp, I started a business with one of my best friends doing non-destructive testing. This accomplishment put me above myself, just trying to comprehend the amount of success I had achieved within one year of being clean and sober, versus all the 23 years before that. I now am a personal trainer, going on my fourth year in college, business owner, delinquent children coach, a governor appointed counsel man, and a person with a great testimony. I strive to help one person every day, and if I am able to, potentially write a book about how it is possible to get out of that same revolving cycle of insanity that drugs and alcohol bring with it. I would like to believe that I have reached to precipice of Maslows Hierarchy of needs (2016), but I don’t feel as though I have obtained my full potential yet. I want to continue to push myself to get further in life, and though I have already come this far, I don’t want to put that objective on the shelf and forget why I work so hard. I know I am destined for so much more, that is why I’m getting the education, and the possibilities of changing this city, this state, and even potentially this country.

Spiritual Well-Being Steps

Everyone likes to classify themselves with some sort of religion, or spiritual practice. However, not everybody understands how to implement them in a proficient manner. The following theory that I will be working on is Maslow’s Hierarchy of needs that was theorized back in 1943. According to D’Souza (2016), Maslow theorized that once someone meets the first level of needs, then they can begin to develop into the next stage, and so on, with the needs being physiological, safety, love and belonging, esteem, and self actualization. He named those deficient needs or D-needs and later developed the B-needs that expanded the self-actualization level into cognitive, aesthetic, self-transcendence, and self-actualization. Though is seems easy enough, there are certain steps that need to be taken in order to reach the heap of the hierarchy.
Maslow’s theory has been used in all sorts of other studies when it comes to one’s mental health and spiritual well-being, in which is still used today. Me personally, I feel as though there is a specific route that we, as humans, can go through to rid ourselves of human nature and tendencies. Th first step will be setting up goals, whether short term and long term in order to obtain each level of the hierarchy. The goals should be used to incorporate different parts of our physiological needs. Where are we going to lay our head at night, or will we have food and water to consume. After goals are set, you have to put them into action with step two, action step. The action step is exactly what it sounds like, where we must find our shelter, food, water, and clothing in order to meet our basic needs. This could be done by securing a job, saving money, and finding a small cheap apartment, or home.
Step three is continuing the build up or basic needs to the point where home is secure and able to manage itself for at least a three-month period. This means that supplies must be stacked up, and enough money to pay bills for a three-month period at least. This will give us the ability to begin focusing on other qualities, like searching for a better job, or shooting for a promotion. Being able to have a higher level of status within our current job, or with a different company can help us to bring in more money. Having moved up the ladder can give us the opportunity to not worry about basic needs as much anymore and start setting new short-term goals. This brings us into the next level in the hierarchy of needs, safety. Having both levels established, we can start working on the next.
Step Four will be our love/well-being focus. At this point we have all the basic needs met, and we can be able to focus on other people as well. We have developed love and safety for ourselves, which is a huge quality to have since we truly can’t show love to other people if we don’t love ourselves first. Loving other people is a direct correlation to how much we love ourselves. Searching for the ones we love should be done in quality places, not bars or night clubs. With us trying to get to a higher self, we can’t be drinking and going out all the time, we must stay disciplined. Which comes step number five, everything in moderation, including moderation. Having a level of discipline to understand that we can’t do one thing too much is a hard trait for some people, but we are already working towards a better self, so we must keep a level of discipline. If we find ourselves consuming alcohol too much to get a sense of social well-being, then we are searching in the wrong places. We must remain strict with ourselves in order to progress through the steps and reach our self-actualization.
Step number six is our status, where we are in our relationships, both business and love relationships. We can’t move on into the next levels of the hierarchy if we haven’t established a feeling of belonging with our social circles and our love relationships. We must do self-assessments in all interactions within our relationships. If a fight flares up, we must be able to find when we are in the wrong and be humble enough to admit it. If we progress any further without being able to self-assess, our relationships will crumble. This brings in step seven, ensuring relationships are secured enough that we can have the confidence that these people will always be in our lives and “have our backs”. Being confident that the people in our lives aren’t going to burn us, or loss our trust, we can begin to entrust them with literally everything. Whether it is us helping them, or them helping us, we always need to have someone there in order to progress with our spiritual well-being. Step number eight is the hardest step thus far, having a level of self-esteem that cannot be broken. Some of us, especially if we came from nothing, don’t feel as though we can ever add up to anything or we will never reach our full potential. However, having a level of self-esteem can helps us break through barriers and get us to the final level of self-actualization. We have made it this far already, so we should be able to remind ourselves where we were, where we have been, and where we are going. Remind ourselves daily of our goals for spirituality, mental capacity, physical well-being, and even status within the workplace. We are our biggest enemy.
Step nine puts us at the thresh hold of crossing over into self-actualization. Combining all these steps into one self-assessment and determine if we have reached the goals we want to obtain, and if there is anything that we could work on. If we personally don’t feel as though there is anything to work on, then we might need to go back through the steps again. There is always room for improvement, and if we understand that, then we can reach self-actualization/ enlightenment. Then the final step, maintenance. Continue to do self-assessments, every day if you must, but we need to understand when we are doing something that is affecting our performance. If we are doing something that doesn’t further our level of spiritual well-being in this world, then we must be able to recognize that it is a problem.
In conclusion, we all are on the pursuit of happiness and well-being. However, some of us don’t quite know how to begin. These steps are set forth for any person that has the desire to be a better person spiritually, physically, emotionally, or mentally. If you take these steps in order, you can find yourself to have a better mind set and a more successful lifestyle. Everyone can put their own spin on it, or you can complete them exactly as stated in this reading. However, if done with a higher level of discipline and a desire to live a better life, you will be able to feel better about yourself and your surroundings.

Mind-Body-Spirit Wellness Paradigm

We all go through life finding what we enjoy the most on our pursuit of happiness and wellness. Some are faster than others when it comes to what they love the most, while others venture around aimlessly trying to find what makes them happy, sort of like it is something tangible. But in order to obtain a level of happiness, three aspects of life have to be aligned, Mind, Body, and Spirit. Where these are lacking, makes it hard to get to a level of enlightenment, thus creating a bad cycle of unhealthy habits, or a bad wellness paradigm. I believe that once people look more inward with themselves, instead of focusing so much on the externals of life, they can reach a level of happiness, and a positive wellness paradigm.
For my future client, I will construct a wellness paradigm that is completely obtainable, as long as they have the drive to do it. It all starts with physical activity at least three times a week for a few different reasons. Depression is found to be one of the worlds most prevalent mood disorders, which harms more people each day. Physical activity within itself is the best anti depressant that there is in this world. While you put yourself through intended physical stress, other stressors tend to be more minimal, thus mitigating stress overall. It is said that depression can actually harm a person’s human-spirit, causing the person to think less of themselves and potentially other people (Krippner, 2014). That is why we must eliminate the core of the problem, and snip depression in the butt.
There will also be sessions of meditation, whether guided in groups or just self-love meditation. Old Traditional Chinese Medicines have had proof of meditating fixing all sorts of different disease and other illnesses. This will contribute to mitigating depression as well, it is sort of a win-win situation. When one meditates, focuses on the breath, and establishes clear thoughts, they are able to clear their head of negative energy, replacing it with good positive energies. The wellness paradigm will be focused on the client being more introspective of themselves, so that they can see what is wrong mentally, emotionally, physically, and spiritually.
The mind-body-spirit wellness can actually be promoted through psychotherapy, specifically with hypnosis. Philip R. Appels has an article about psychosynthesis, where he believes is a concept of one’s “Higher-self” and its ability to communicate their “will” to the “conscience-self” (Krippner, 2014). Being able to obtain a level of enlightenment within its self, can cause a person to have a more positive attitude and world view of their surroundings. Being able to see the beauty within this world creates a whole new outlook towards literally everything. Instead of being pessimistic about the world, thinking that it is all going to come to an end, the person can believe that we will all get through this as a whole human species. When my client reaches that point, they can see clearly now that the rain is gone, and see beauty of life.
This all will help me as a practitioner through seeing the transformation take place. I know within myself, that when I look at someone’s growth in anything that they are doing, I find it to be beautiful. That is with anything they are doing, especially when it comes to making their life better for not just themselves, but the people around them. As I have grown from what I used to be when I was younger, has actually affected my daughters as well, in a positive way. My daughters have looked up to me a lot more this time around, which may just be because they are older and understand better. However, them seeing me be more positive, they tend to be more positive as well. Which brings back the feeling of accomplishment again, seeing my daughters grow into great young adolescents.
In conclusion, establishing a good positive wellness paradigm for ourselves, can actually extend the longevity of our lives. Living a more healthier lifestyle through physical activity and the right diet, has shown to help a copious amount of people throughout the years. Creating a weekly schedule can structure your life more, which in return gives you more of a foundation. Also, leaving our ego at the door, we can further relationships, and even create new relationships. Meeting Maslows hierarchy of needs can help us move up in our lives in so many different ways. It all starts with our health being one of our main focuses.

Optimism

Optimism is something that most adults should try to obtain throughout their lives. Instead of focusing on the negatives and what potentially could go wrong, I feel as though they should think about how it is all going to go right and how it will all be okay. If a person focuses on the negatives in life and they continue to put that out into the universe, they tend to receive it back as well. Being hopeful or having the confidence that something will go your way, honestly is a better way of life. I believe that if more people thought this way, there wouldn’t be so much animosity between people, or even jealousy of other people succeeding in something that you want to succeed in. They could do this through having a more open mind and bringing in the Law of Attraction. If you think it into existence, you are more apt to receive the thing that you are focusing on the most. This could also be great for your Health and Wellness since you are more driven to accomplish tasks, and you aren’t as stressed out when you don’t get the outcome you want.
According to Hefferson and Boniwell, optimism is considered a “Velcro Construct” in which puts happiness, health, and accomplishment all in the same category (Hefferson, et al., 2011). The correlation with a person’s happiness and optimism is so strong that we should see more people living their lives this same way. Remaining optimistic in situations can mitigate stressors in which we all know affect the human body tremendously. Instead of stressing about the situation we are in, we should remain optimistic that we will get the outcome that we desire. However, we must remain humble enough in case we don’t get the result we desire. I am going to use my recent Boxing match this previous Saturday as an example. Though I have been training hard and was speaking it out into the universe that I was going to win, I ended up losing. I allowed my mind to wander from my desired outcome, whether it was due to thinking of other aspects of life, or just allowing myself to get stuck in my head. Boxing for me is more of a mental game, since I have the cardio to go 15 rounds, my mind shuts down sometimes when I step into that ring. Furthermore, even within the feeling of defeat, I still hold my head high because it was a learning experience. I now know what I must work on, and I refuse to allow myself to give up because I am optimistic that I will only get better in the future.
Optimism in thee workplace can actually enhance yourself, and your fellow co-workers to work harder, especially when you all are working towards the same outcome. I will use my own small business as an example. I started a Partnership business with one of my good friends back in 2019, where we are the workers, owners, and advertisers. Though our plates fill up fast and the workload seems to get overwhelming, we get the tasks marked off the list. This last previous year through this pandemic was rough. We had to cut expenses and even cut our pay to make it through all of this. However, through the tribulations with emotions on edge, we remained optimistic that we would make it through, and we would do anything that we would need to, to make it happen. Here we are a year later, with work picking back up when we had every right to focus on the negatives and potentially sell our company.
In conclusion, optimism is great, and one of the best quality that an individual can have. I believe that anybody can obtain any goal that they have set for themselves, within reason of course. You still must remain logical and understand that you couldn’t be a big football star if you’re only five-foot-tall and 120 pounds. But having the serenity to accept the things you can’t change, the courage to change the things you can, and the wisdom to know the difference will assist you to becoming more optimistic. Optimism is a direct correlation to spirituality since most spiritual people pray to their higher power for the things they want in this world. Of course, they must put in the work as well, but continuously praying or putting your goals out in the universe can and will help you obtain them.

Unit 1 Unit 1 Dietary Trends and Nutrition
Information to Remember:
Something to remember is that not everyone is the same with it comes to consuming food. Their physical activity levels need to be put into consideration, along with their own proprietary needs. When one diet plan works for one person, it may not be as good for the next individual. However, following these recommendations is advised for a healthy lifestyle.
Resource:
The following website is the site of the dietary guidelines for Americans, children and adult alike. It also brings in nutrition for older adults that may need to have a proprietary diet plan. Nursing or pregnant woman also are referenced here, pertaining to their needs in caloric intake and micros/macros intake (USDA, 2020). It is an easy means of information that anyone can access at any time of the day.
Unit 2 Unit 2 Dietary Trends and Nutrition
Information to Remember:
Remembering the traits of lobbyists is something to consider when watching these promotion videos for products. Their main objective is to sell their products they are promoting, which gives them the quality of white lies. Not telling the consumers about how bad their product may be is unexceptional since consumers should know the pros and cons of what they consume.
Resource:
This source brings to our attention about how many companies have people lobbying for their products or services. According to Open Secrets (n.d.), there are 222 clients being lobbied, with 701 reported issues due to these lobbyists. This is updated every year after a report has been issued, it continues to rise.
Unit 3 Unit 3 Dietary Trends and Nutrition
Information to Remember:
Something to remember is the difference between grocery stores, supermarkets, and hypermarkets. Trying to keep things more local with the grocery stores will go back into your community eventually. However, hypermarkets can be a one stop shop for food, hardware, or even tools.
Resource:
According to Quain (2018), a local grocery store will pack the foods you need and even deliver them to your home. It is a concept that started in the early 40’s, which gives the consumer a more personally experience. With supermarkets and hypermarkets, it isn’t as personal since they are only focused on their balance of income.
Unit 4 Unit 4 Dietary Trends and Nutrition
Information to Remember:
Foodborne illnesses scatter the globe every year. United States has the most illnesses pertaining to cross contamination or microorganisms getting into foods. More and more illnesses are coming to the surface, causing companies to send out recalls on their very own products. These products need to be recalled for the illnesses to not spread.
Resource:
According to Truman (2016), Salmonella is one of the leading illnesses, accounting for numbers of one million illnesses, 19,000 hospitalizations, and 380 deaths each year. This is many illnesses from just one of the foodborne transmissions. Most people can get better by themselves, however, the older population can really be impacted by Salmonella.
Unit 5 Unit 5 Dietary Trends and Nutrition
Information to Remember:
Genetically Modified organisms are becoming more and more integrated in almost every aspect of our world. From animals, to foods like wheat, corn, and other large, harvested crops. It gives the recipient the ability to be packed full of nutrients, grow at a faster rate, and yield larger harvests throughout the year. Same thing with animals, such as chickens which grow to full sized in less amount of time than normal.
Resource:
According to Kukreja (n.d.), GMOs are organisms that have been directly manipulated to carry traits that they don’t currently have to enhance growth, nutrients, and reproduction rates. Our DNA is the genetic makeup of every living organism, and when it is modified in a certain way, it can deplete it, or maximize it. There are all kinds of differences when it comes to GMO’s where people are against them, or for them.
Unit 6 Unit 6 Dietary Trends and Nutrition
Information to Remember:
When walking through the produce section of your supermarket, you will see all kinds of different produce surrounding you. Most people just go there, grab the things they need, and continue with their shopping. If they were to look a little bit closer at the labeling on these products, they would find that there is a such thing as organically grown food. You don’t have to go to a farmers’ market to get organic foods, because they are beginning to make it to all the stores.
Resource:
Organic foods are beginning to make a surplus into the mainstream selling market. According to FoodTank (n.d.), There are 19 large companies that are beginning to make most of their products organic. These companies are also starting to lobby to the people about the benefits of pure organic foods and the lack to insecticides.
Unit 7 Unit 7 Dietary Trends and Nutrition
Information to Remember:
Globalization of fast-food restaurants have been making a breakthrough into other countries around the world. Though there are benefits for underdeveloped countries for employment reasons, there are also a lot of downfalls. One of the main reasons why America is one of the most overweight Countries in the world, is because we have the conveniences of so many different fast-food restaurants.
Resource:
According to Salisbury (2016), McDonalds has spread across 117 different countries with around 1.7 million people employed entirely. This fast-food chain has been named the largest globalized fast-food chain, where you can see one on almost every corner, within every town. Even small towns have been found to have these restaurants, along with underdeveloped countries.
Unit 8 Unit 8 Dietary Trends and Nutrition
Information to Remember:
Prescription medication for weight loss has begun to make its way into the market. There are people out there that think if they take a certain pill, then they can lose the amount of weight that they desire to. However, if they don’t change their lifestyle then nothing is going to happen to the extreme that they may need. You cannot take the pill and continue to sit on the couch all day watching television.
Resource:
The best process of losing weight is changing your lifestyle, such as changing your diet, or exercising more often. Losing weight more naturally through these means will help with toning muscle and eliminating an abundance of excess skin. According to The National Institute of Diabetes and Digestion and Kidney Diseases (2016), adults can lose up to 3%-12% of their starting body weight with taking prescription medications along side lifestyle changes like diet and exercise.
Unit 9 Unit 9 Dietary Trends and Nutrition
Information to Remember:
Something to remember with any career, is you can get your degree, but you can also get certifications along the way. There is a laundry list of certificates that are offered online to nearly every civilian that has access to an internet connection. Finding the right certification can really make your resume’ more solid with great accreditations.
Resource:
Fitness, nutrition, physical therapy, and holistic practice certificates all can be found online. A great source is the Nutrition certification Review site that offers links to the best online certificates that a person can find or receive (2018). There are guided studies for some of them, while others are simply an exam of choice. You must be able to prove that you know what you are going to be certified in.
Part 2: Cultural Food Choice Explanation and Screenshot
Mongolian food stems from the Eurasian steppe, with combinations of Chinese dishes, Russian Dishes, and other central Asian countries. With the combination of all of these, the traditional dishes are almost identical to what you would find in the Chinese Countries. However, it is the culture behind it that makes itself stand out from the Chinese. When beef is served, it must be picked up by hand to represent that their people hunted that meat. And the mutton (sheep) has a tradition since they bring the sheep up from lambs. Each type of food has its own quality as well, with most of it being surrounded by milk. They create milk skin, with is said to have a lot of nutrients and healing properties. It is made by boil milk directly over a fire, while continuously adding more cold milk during the cooking process. After removed from the heat, they delicately remove it with chopsticks, and dry it out. Where it is then folded and served with dishes. Dumplings are another relevant type of food they make with those milk skins and pastas.
I will create a dish called Horhog, which is one of their delicate fests meals that include pastas, dumplings a beef tidbit. Of course, I don’t have the exact sauce that they would prepare it with, but I will create it to my best ability. I will also attempt to make the noodles and steam the vegetables to the best of my ability. Their tradition of scooping the beef by hand will also be integrated into this meal with myself and my spouse. All of this served up with a cold class of milk. The only thing that is excluded from this preparation is the soup that is usually served with this feast. The only challenges that I faced was making the noodles of their culture. Other than that, everything ran smoothly and with the taste being quite swell, I may make this dish again in the future.

Client OTC Dietary Supplement

Our country is one of the most overweight countries in the entire world. It isn’t a great trait to have as a country since we want to claim to be a healthy society. A lot of it stems from the number of fast-food chains we have, and the lack of physical activity. Overweight people attempt to take a secret pill that will just melt the fat away, without putting in the effort to lose the weight. You can’t take a dietary supplement and continue to sit on the couch or eat garbage type foods and sugars. There must be a complete lifestyle change to lose the weight that you want to. A lifestyle change that is going to take some time and effort but will reap some amazing rewards if it is continued. There are separate over the counter (OTC) dietary supplements that can be taken to assist in your adventure into losing weight.
As your nutrition professional, we will take a few assessments in order to establish a groundwork that we can begin building from. Things like the physical activity readiness questionnaire (PAR-Q) and Vo2 Max will help us see where you are at currently before we begin any workout regimen. Nutritionally, we will determine what you currently eat on a daily basis. This will give us an idea of how many calories are consumed, and what needs to be cut out in order to begin losing weight. First things first, sugar and fast food needs to be removed from your diet. Can I trust you to get all of it out of your house? I will periodically do check-ups to ensure you aren’t storing sugars or soda beverages at home. Finally, we will go over different dietary supplements that you can choose to take throughout the duration of your transformation.
Muscle building will be done through protein powder before each workout or as a meal replacement throughout the day. We will avoid bulking regimens such as taking your weight in grams for proteins, and twice that for carbs, so we can lose the weight. A benefit while losing weight is building muscle as well so we can turn that fat into muscle. Being a six-foot tall and 250-pound male, with a BMI of 33.9, we want to try and get you down to around 195 with a toned body mass. Your BMI will still show that you are just overweight at 26.4, but you will have more muscle mass than before (CDC, 2021). At the age of 28, this should be easy to do, but you must remember, it will take time and you will not see the results for some time. But for us to reduce your cardiovascular problems and diabetes, we must keep at it.
Now with the OTC dietary supplement you were looking into, I feel you need to know the risks and benefits of taking this product from Repp Sports. Their L-Carnitine Thermogenic Stack comes with their thermo product and their rapid weight loss promoter. It comes with 30 servings that will be taken at noon with your meal just before your afternoon workout. On their website this product claims to boost fat metabolism, metabolism accelerant, thermogenesis, and mental acuity (ReppSports, 2021). Though it sounds like the magic pill, there are risks that come with it. There are side effects that come along with a weight loss stack such as this one. According to Engle (2017), nausea, vomiting, skin rash, and GI tract discomfort are some of the main side effects, with severe cases being rare. We will try this with you and see if the side effects are too much to handle, and if they are, we will discontinue use.
In conclusion, our work here is just beginning, and it may take some time before you begin seeing any results. And it is going to be rough in the first month since we will be replacing old habits, but we must keep pushing forward. Taking these supplements on top of changing your lifestyle choices will be the best route to take in losing the weight you want to lose. Furthermore, we will lean on your positive lifestyle choices more than the dietary supplements since it is more organic and most effective. Below is one deal meal plan that you can continue to repeat or mix it up with the same caloric intake.
Breakfast Snack Lunch Snack Dinner -8 oz. Water -1 cup of oatmeal -1 slice of toast -1 cup of berries -6 oz Orange Juice Some type of fruit. -8 oz. Water -1 cup of yogurt -two cups of white rice -6 oz salmon -Thermo Diet Stack 1 cup of Nuts trail mix -8 oz. I know its long, But please stick with me, and tell me what you think in the comments section.
Please take a time to listen to this while you are going through your day. I will admit, this is my first speaker presentation that I have done with this new Mic setup. So please, ignore the couple slip ups. Also, on one of the slides, you will hear my youngest (Aurora Grace) trying to be obnoxious while dad is working. If any of you have some tips or tricks on how to improve my speaking experience, please reach out to me. I appreciate your time, and look forward to hearing all of your feedback. One more time, a good diet regimen and a level of physical activity ca benefit you in so many more ways than one!

Preview of Upcoming Presentation Vitamins, minerals, and nutritional supplements

This a short little teaser about the upcoming presentation that will be posted this week. I am going to focus on Turmeric for the interest of all its medicinal properties. Turmeric has been used in India for years and is what gives curry its yellowish color. It has been used as a spice for food and offers other medicinal purposes for our bodies and our brain. According to Gunnars (2021), there are 10 different health benefits of Turmeric, that have actually been proven in many different means. One of the major ingredients in Turmeric is curcumin, which isn’t necessarily very bioavailable to our bodies. According to Gunnar (2021), using piperine which can be found in black pepper, can help our body absorb this nutrient better. It is also a proponent to help reduce inflammation, which has recently been proven as one of the causes of obesity in today’s society. According to Watts (2022), the programmed death-ligand 1 (PD-L1) protein is speculated to be a molecule that directly affects obesity and even insulin resistance, which also regulates adipose tissue immune cell composition. I recently wrote about this in Unit 1 discussion, so finding the relevance was amazing. I believe this to be a good topic of discussion for the power point presentation for many reasons. First of all, there is so much information pertaining to it that can make a lengthy presentation. Secondly, I feel as though there are so many people in our current climate that would rather find an alternative to conventional western medicines. And finally, I find it to be an easy spice to consume, since it actually tastes good in foods, unlike some other nutrients. I hope all is well, and I can’t wait to see all of your presentations on your sites.

Organic Versus Conventional Produce Cost Comparison

The following is a comparison chart between Organic Produce, and conventional produce. Of course, there are all different kinds of comparisons that can vary from store to store, but this is centered around the local Wal-Mart. We have a Natural Grocers store here, however, it wouldn’t have been an accurate comparison since they don’t typically carry conventional produce. With inflation happening currently here in April of 2022, some of these prices may change. One thing that is positive, is that some of the organic produce doesn’t have that large of a difference in pricing from regular foods. If you want to avoid eating foods that have been tainted by insecticides or GMO’s, then take the extra time to find the organic foods. I promise you, you won’t feel that sickly feeling from a bad diet if you go this route. Remember, Monsanto was a huge component of Agent Orange back in the day. Monsanto is also the company that makes insecticides/pesticides that are used on these factory farms. I don’t know about you, but for me, that has me second guessing their integrity when it comes to their products. They’ll go to any depth to get a larger profit margin each year. The choice is yours.
Organic Versus Conventional Food Cost Comparison
Choose five produce items (fruits and/or vegetables) to compare.
Produce Item Name Conventional: Cost Organic: Cost Honeycrisp Apples $5.97 3-pound bag $6.96 2-pound bag Bananas $0.59 per pound $1.39 per pound Strawberries $3.98 per pound $4.98 per pound Grape Tomatoes $2.48 10 oz. $2.66 10 oz. Blueberries $3.38 per pint $4.74 1 pint Pricing may vary. These were accumulated from Wal-Mart in Casper Wyoming. Questions to Answer:
- How easy or challenging was it to find organically grown foods?
It was really easy to find both conventional and organic produce since it its all surrounding you the second you walk into the store. Each double-sided isle was proprietary to that piece of produce. For example, all the different types of apples were lined up in a row, and all the bananas were sitting on their own island. The smaller packaging such as the blueberries and grape tomatoes was slightly more difficult since the packaging was smaller. But once the conventional berries were found, the organic was soon thereafter.
- How were the organic foods labeled?
The organic foods were labeled clearly with the “USDA organic” logo adorned on the packaging. The bananas were bundled together in bunches with wrapping holding them together in big bold “ORGANIC” letters. The apples were all placed in their own 2-pound bags that were sealed with the USDA logo and Marketside Organic.
- If your local grocery store, discount outlet, or farmer’s market does not regularly stock organic foods what is the reason for it?
Our local grocery store stays stocked up year-round. The number of organic compared to conventional is a lot less, however.
- Discuss any cost difference you found. How would you explain the price difference to clients?
The cost differences weren’t too astounding. Except for the bananas, blueberries, and strawberries, which were nearly a dollar more per unit of measurement. Conventional bananas were significantly cheaper than organics with a difference of $0.80. if we made the two-pound bag of organic apples, then it would be a total of $10.44 which is nearly a whole five dollars more than conventional (Walmart, 2021).

Globalization of Fast Food Restaurants

The globalization of fast food has been making its claim for the last few decades. With McDonalds being one of the main surpluses of fast food throughout the entire world. According to Salisbury (2016), McDonald’s has 32,000 different restaurants within 117 separate countries, which is the main company that has branched out. There are a lot of risks, right along with a lot of benefits pertaining to the globalization of these fast-food chains. Educating the communities about what exactly these fast-food chains provide can be a large aspect of a healthy community. We must investigate the foods that we eat in order to understand the risks that are involved in eating these processed foods. Cardiovascular disease and diabetes stem from these fast-food restaurants more often than not. Yet the convenience and the price of the products both make it attractive to eat at these chains.
Food choices have changed tremendously due to the globalization of these fast-food restaurants. In todays fast paced world, everyone desires instant gratification with nearly every aspect of their lives. One of the most important traits of a human, is that they must eat in order to survive. That alone makes these fast-food restaurants more attractive, since people just pay a few dollars, and their food will be made for them in a span of minutes. Traditionally, the only meal that gets cooked anymore would be dinner, which even then can be replaced with fast-food. People don’t think they have the time to cook their own meals, when in reality, they are just sitting around streaming movies instead of doing what is important. That is one of the benefits of the globalization of fast-food.
Another benefit would be that it does provide cheap food to underdeveloped countries. In these underdeveloped countries, food is scarce and employment for individuals takes time. However, being able to get a dollar burger can help drive people to these restaurants in order to provide their bodies with the fuel that they need. And finally, another benefit would be that it provides jobs for individuals. People are able to open up their own locations within these monopolized companies fairly simply. Of course, a good portion of profits makes its way back to the corporation, but people can begin setting themselves up for future successes in a low-level country. On top of that, people are able to provide jobs within the area since the restaurant needs employees to run sufficiently.
One of the biggest risks of the globalization of fast-food restaurants is the health risks that are tied to these products. As stated before, cardiovascular disease and diabetes are stemmed form these type of industries due to the ingredients within the products. High fructose corn syrup and loads of sugar are found in almost every beverage. According to Regoli (2019), people that eat fast food regularly are more than 50% susceptible to depression than someone who does not eat it. There are loads of health risks that come with eating these products, which people should be educated about.
Another risk is the fact that the United States is one of the most overweight/obese countries in the world, probably due to these fast-food restaurants. With them moving over to other countries, their statistics of overweight individuals may grow as well. With their products literally being addictive and convenient, more and more individuals will be driven to eat at these restaurants. According to Regoli (2019), there are scientists that believe that these products are just as addictive as heroin, where people will actually show withdrawal symptoms when they cannot eat these products.
The final risk is you don’t really know exactly what you are eating. With all the foods being shipped all around the world, it must be frozen upon being created so that it doesn’t spoil by the time it reaches the location. This means there is an unhealthy amount of preservative in them, which is yet another terrible ingredient to consume. The same thing with cross-contamination, where all the products are being made directly next to eat other. So if you have some sort of food allergy, or are a vegetarian, then they cannot guarantee that it hasn’t been contaminated with whatever it is that you need to avoid.
It comes down to whether the pros outweigh the cons, and whether your health is more important than enjoying a quick meal. Does convenience and price mean more to you in the current moment than your health later on down the road. Living in the moment is something that can be beneficial for nearly every aspect of our lives. And if you desire to take care of yourself, right now, this moment, then you can continue to live in the moment long into the future. If we cannot make the right decision when it comes to our nutrition, then the longevity of our lives will decrease. If you are a consumer of these products, try abstaining for a month and see how much better you feel. The depression state and upset stomach will leave you within the first week. There are other means of eating food, even all the way on the other side of the world.
